My son asked me to make him a coffee table for Christmas. I finally finished it this weekend. It is made from a cross cut slab of walnut that is about three feet across by 3 1/2 inches thick. The legs are beech that came from the woods behind my house. I sanded the top approximately level and used System Three Mirror Coat two part epoxy finish (took three coats) like you see on bar tops. I was particularly fortunate to find a bracing piece that had an odd right angle branch off the main limb. The walnut slab is cut at the intersection of three major trunks and was air dried for at least ten years. This piece is a real departure from the usual Queen Anne and Chippendale I usually make.

John, I totally concur with the "...a real departure from the usual Queen Anne and Chippendale I usually make.":D BUT, it's definitely a neat piece! You're lucky to have a slab that large without some huge crack going down the middle of it, as well! Nice job and I'll bet your son is or will be real happy with it!:)

Great Piece John. Fortunately, I had an opportunity to see this one in person. Very nice, and yes... much different than your normal work. Great job.
