I opened my copy of the latest Furniture and Cabinetmaking, and there is not just one article but TWO articles on Brian Holmcombe. Way to go Brian!

Great articles, the first about Brian, and the second about his latest piece, a bench with a lot of soul I heartedly enjoyed both articles.

December 2019. Issue 290

Regards from Singapore ... en route to Munich

Derek

p.s. posted on the Handtool forum as well, as Brian posts to both fori, and some here do not go there, and vice versa.

I knew the magazine existed but didn't think we could get it here in the States. Apparently that is an option but damn that subscription is pretty hefty for us US people. I have heard this is probably the best magazine out there right now though.

Awesome magazine-been a subscriber for years. This is what I tell my family to get me for Christmas every year. Nice to get a different perspective on woodworking from across the pond and around the world.

Well done but not surprising. F &C was always a high end magazine with stuff you couldn't find elsewhere. I used to suscribe- mainly because of the articles on old English machinery. It was my favorite mag except for the cost which was cheap compared to an addiction to Wadkin and Robinson. Dave

Been noticing Brian’s post/discussions on this forum and OWWM for the past couple years. It was a shock when I actually looked at his website and saw a pic of him. I’m guessing mid thirties. I was under the impression from his knowledge etc he is much, much older. A well versed old timer. Very impressive.

Congratulations, but I wouldn't think anyone would be surprised!

I'm looking forward to reading that issue, but the picture on the cover, with the guy holding a brand new 880, with a bar that has never been in anything, seems quite odd. It would mean more to me to see the saw he's been using.

A machinist's talent for precision & accuracy, expressed with an artist's eye - and then throw in the gifted advice here!

Well deserved congratulations!

And BTW - The house next door is still for sale, but price came down and buyers are getting more determined. The first 6 I just glared at and they ran; this last group - - I finally had to practice the bagpipes to get 'em to leave. Better get your offer in now.

yup, seems like we have taught Brian an awful lot over here . . . . despite his insistence upon having clean carpet on the shop floor, the embroidered slippers, the classy cravat, the dapper smoking jacket, super sharp tools . . . .

Brian, nice to see you get the recognition you deserve. I think you have inspired many of us here to reach for a higher level of craftsmanship, and your willingness to share has always been most appreciated.

Best, Patrick

Does the magazine have copywright ownership of the images? Curious why you won't post a picture.

A gentle reminder for forgetting is all that was needed.

Oh my, exquisite. Love everything about it.

I assume you made the brass holders for the feet, but what are the feet - specialty feet or something repurposed?? Or re-imagined?

Brian Holcombe
12-23-2019, 9:46 AM
Thanks, Patrick. The feet are nylon, I made the brass parts.

It appears that Brian might be a regular contributor to Furniture and Cabinetmaking magazine. He has a traditional Japanese shoji screen in Issue 291 (https://pocketmags.com/us/furniture-and-cabinetmaking-magazine) and a bed with traditional Japanese joinery in Issue 292 (https://pocketmags.com/us/furniture-and-cabinetmaking-magazine/291).
