And throwing out some parts that can't be used....

Had a 1 x 6
421760
With "issues"...
421761
Removed the issues. Which left...
421762
Had other scraps laying around, some too wide, some too thick..
421763
Ripped the wider ones down to where the tablesaw could reach more than 1/2 way across....reset the fence to about 1/2" from the blade

Not quite up to hand saw rips....ticker complains a bit...
so...1/2" came out to 0.445"..
421764
And the "leftovers" came out to 0.290" or so...
421765

Might be a start for a few boxes?
421766
Just laid this down here, did not rezero...told me how thick the parts are.

Letting these sit for a day...or two....and then see about some frames for them to reside in...and make some dividers for the inside of a box ?
Stay tuned. So far, wood is just Ash....will see IF I need any Pine, or Poplar parts...

Beats burning the scraps...

Intend to glue a few panels up, trying to match for best grain. Still have some 4/4 x 6 Ash on hand, I can rip down to build frames to hold the panels. Maybe a raised panel in a frame style of box? Last large one was Walnut & Cherry. Have some thin Poplar to use for the bottom....

Maybe Tongue & Groove joints to help glue the corners of the box? Might take a few weeks to build....letting the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up work out the details.

Was too busy today, to get much done. Might try this weekend? Actually kind of cold down in the shop, right now....

Good on you. I'm a little sick (ask my wife) about throwing away/burning scraps and off cuts, but it pays me to save and salvage. Happy holidays.

Can't wait to see where this one goes. I don't post much, but I really enjoy all your build threads and it is really interesting to watch how your projects tie one to another with material re-use and leftovers.

Well, planed a few scraps flat...
421893
Cut them for width....then the mitersaw to cut for length..
421894
Had 5 narrow strips, I got those glued up into a top..
421895
2 long sides were 11" long, and a pair of ends at 6-1/2" long..
421896
6mm mortise chisel to do some layout work..
421897
Then a backsaw to make a bunch of cuts..
421898
Then the waste chopped out..
421899
Transfer some marks to the end pieces...repeat...
421900
2-1/2 hours of shop time...I am worn out. Need to cut and chop 3 more sets of fingers...and then see about a groove for a plywood bottom...always tomorrow...

Stay tuned :D

A little but more shop time tonight....got a few more of these done..
421975
Hardest part, is to cut on the waste side of the lines, leaving as much of the line as I can...then chop halfway down, flip it over, and a couple chops to pop the waste out.
421976
Next time in the shop, I can fine tune the fit. I need to set up a plane..
421977
To plow a groove for the bottom panel....as for a marking knife...
421978
May not be a Kiridashi...but the name does start with a "K"....

Maybe an hour in the shop, tonight...stay tuned..:D

Took the holidays off from the shop.....no need to try my luck after trying out my Christmas gift...
422176
As this doesn't blend too well, with sharp, pointy objects.....

Maybe tomorrow, after Brunch....I can plough a few grooves....
have a Happy one, people, and stay safe.

And a Happy New Year....
Shop time today....
422226
4 grooves milled...
422227
Plywood panel was sized to fit, then the edges were beveled for a better fit
422228

Then a glue up was done
422229
Checked for square...waiting on the glue to dry. Had to sharpen the #12 cutter for the Stanley #45, before setting up to plough the grooves
422230

Will see about flattening the lid, maybe tomorrow?
422231
May take a while...
Stay tuned...

Box is out of the clamps...clean up done..
422400
Plane and sanders...
422401422402
Trimming the blank for a lid...
422403
Trimmed for length. There WAS a knot along one edge, ripped that off. Then cobbled a lift/handle..
422404
Had to resaw the higher spots down to 3/8" or so. To match the thinner spots...took a bit of scrubbing to to do the clean up...
422405
Then a #3 plane, and the sanders....
422406
Almost done...was getting a bit worn out...stay tuned:D

Took the day off, today. May see IF it will open up on a Monday...if not...meh. Need to look through my boxes of hardware, and see if I have a couple hinges...if not, then off to Hobby Lobby to see what they have.

May work on the dividers, next...

steven c newman
12-30-2019, 8:16 PM
Monday...shop is normally closed, so......road trip!
Drove up to Lima, OH today.....had a "budget" of $10 ( all I had in me pocket..) and was shopping for some hardware to use on this box....wasn't sure on the size of hinges..
422554
So I picked the 2 smallest sets....same with handles...
422555
Then I saw a few other "goodies"....
422556
Like corner brackets, to protect the lid's corners...and..
422557
Maybe some ball feet for the bottom of the box....then..
422558
Maybe something to keep the lid closed....results?
422559
Had to borrow a little from the Boss.....$16.54 for all of this stuff.....Hobby Lobby is a very dangerous place to go....
May see about making the dividers, tomorrow, when the shop opens back up....have a pile of thin ( 0.290") Ash boards I could make use of
422560
Might be enough there? Still have a stack of the 0.445" thick boards......maybe a second box?

Stay tuned...

Went with the shorter hinges...
422718
Them are some tiny screws....strange screwdriver?

Handles and feet, hardware is done..
422719
And a coat of Gunstock stain applied, and wiped down...
422720
May get a few coats of Amber Shellac...tomorrow?

steven c newman
01-01-2020, 10:48 PM
Well, sit this for a better view..
422739
Then open the lid...
422740
Had to plane, and notch the slats, to make the dividers. Mitre Box to cut for lengths. Bandsaw to make the notches
422741
#60-1/2 block plane to plane the slats flat. Ganged things up, and a #3 plane jointed to the edges.
422742
Just a friction fit. Planes?
422743
#3 Type 11. It got put to work, so I could do a glue up today
422744
Lid for Box #2....I also processed 4 pieces for the sides of the #2 box..
422745
Maybe tomorrow, eh? Had to sweep the floor..
422746
Twas a very busy day....
Stay tuned:D

01-02-2020, 7:31 PM
Today's session was about 2 hours long, then the back started to stiffen up..
Mitre box trimmed a few parts..
422795
Needed the trim things down, to match the lid's size

422796
Parts needed planed flat...
422797
Then cleared the bench, to make room for some toys..
422798
Dug out some chisels
422799
Cut a few dovetails...
422800
Managed to get 2 corners done..before the back started in..
422801
Had to sweep the floor, then close up shop....was a bust 2 hours...
Stay tuned..

Great build thread Steven. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you. These projects keep me from being bored. I can work when I feel up to it, and not work when I don't.

Took the day off from the shop, today. Might try tomorrow, we'll see. Waiting on Box #2, before I apply a top coat to both boxes. Box #2 might wind up being a Recipe Box. Not sure what Box#1 will be. I try to show as much of the steps I use....more about what the work is, than about what the tools cost. Keep hearing about how little time some have for the shop....I have been keeping a 1-2 hour schedule in the shop....instead of the sometimes 6 hour days.

Need to finish the other 2 corners on Box#2, and mill a groove for the bottom to sit in. Then see about some hardware.
Just messing around with some scraps, trying to stay busy.

steven c newman
01-04-2020, 12:10 PM
Well, maybe about 1pm today....I can meander down to the shop...for a while.

Stay tuned

Got bored, started at 1200 hrs.....got to this point...
422947
About 1400 hrs...maybe a little after? then swept the floor, and closed the shop....waiting on the glue to cure a day...
Grooves done...
422951
Long and short ones..
422952
Used a fancy chisel to chop tails with...
422953
Because, long ago, someone swore I needed to grind such an end to a chisel
422956
Since it could reach into the corners...seemed to work
Plywood panel for the bottom of the box...was a tad wide...and wider at one end...we have ways..
422958
Plane to a line....length was then easy enough to do...on the Stanley #358 Mitre Box.
422960
Dry fit, before spreading the glue....
422961
Made sure the lid was about the right size....
Busy 2 hours, or so....taking the rest of the day off
Stay tuned :D

01-06-2020, 2:57 PM
Clamps came off this morning...nothing flew apart...always a good sign :D
Clean up with plane, and sanders....
423078
All 4 sides. The fit the lid to the box...
423079
Select some hinges to install...
423080
And lay out the rest of the hardware..
423081
Headless nail to use as a pilot hole bit.

Maybe after Supper, I can install all the hardware...we'll see...
Stay tuned :D

steven c newman
01-06-2020, 8:46 PM
Hinges are installed, handles and a latch, as well....
423110
Hinges...
423111
A latch, and some handles...
423112
Stain is called Gunstock. Not much room inside for dividers, though..
423113
So, close the lid, I laid a 6" Combo square down for scale...
423114
Waiting on the stain to dry....before I Amber Shellac both boxes...
423115
3 coats each, should be enough?

Those fancy-schmancy corners are nailed on, BTW. Not too bad, for a pile of scrap wood?

Steven,

Very nice boxes! Good job and I enjoyed the build. I would say pretty good for scrap wood.

Both boxes now have 3 coats of Amber Shellac...
423159
Inside and out..
423160
Kind of a fancy Recipe Box?
423161
Rub the finish down after a bit.
I think I can call these two done?
423162
Lid is opened a bit, to let the insides "air out".

Thanks for looking in.
