An interesting read, if somewhat verbose. The general message is finding good tools in Japan has become very difficult. It may be easier to find good tools in the west? (My question not his).
The soft steel component of their blades makes them quicker to sharpen and get back to work, not so much an issue for the ‘hobbyist’.
The dichotomy of the mystique of sharpening with esoteric stones that comes with a warning not to over-sharpen! Makes me feel good about my standard stones and no I’m not throwing out my 10,000 grit!

His philosophy of the first stone being the most important gives great credence to the diamond/CBN plates levelling the playing field between east and west sharpening times.

All the thoughts about elusive edge quality should be in relation to the wood being worked in your shop.

I can chop a great many mortices in white oak with Barr chisels and still not need sharpening. My medium priced small set of Japanese chisels from eBay have become my favourite bench chisels, despite the edges chipping a bit. My Narex chisels have their place at the job site levelling paint blobs on steel doors, hacking into 2x4’s etc. Poor tools do have a place!

I buy from Stan and take his advise on many things Japanese tools and knifes. Stan is a should read by anyone interested in Japanese tools, not only is he informative he is a hoot to read.
