I am fairly new to woodworking and definitely new to buying used tools so I thought I would get you guys opinion on this jointer I found. I’m not extremely interested, but I thought I would ask so maybe I could learn something. Used powermatic with Byrd shelix and supposedly rebuilt.

If that machine does indeed have a new Baldor motor, and with the slightly rusty Byrd head I would say the price is decent.

Tough call on that price. Yes that’s a helical cutterhead but as Mike said it’s rusty. 120 or 220? Possibly 3 phase? And it’s a 6” jointer at the end of the day, which you very well would want to upgrade at some point to a larger machine. And, as we’ve bashed out many times here, the helical cutterhead on a jointer isn’t as important as a helical bead on the planer.

Even though it’s “completely rebuilt” it’ll need some clean up and checking over.

Do yourself a favor and just step up to the plate and buy an 8 inch jointer.

That is one of the reasons I wasn’t that interested in this one.
