Here's a pic of a joint I made for my brother's garage a few years ago. As you can see, he's putting the space to good use.

There's a picture of our dad walking down the road, he's long gone now.

Must be a heated garage, can’t do that in Ontario the wine would freeze. The locking dowels seem a bit close to the edge?

Old shops, barns, sheds all have their (many) stories. The joinery, wine bottles, antlers, photo - all good stuff and memories for those that are a part of it. Urbanization, downsizing, smaller families, less handwork may be watering that phenomenon down some.

The dowels are better being closer to the edge on shorter tenons like that where the bigger risk is that the tenons will shear along the grain. Also, the braces work in compression so shouldn't see much stress on the dowels in any case.

I was thinking about hurricanes and tornadoes lifting the roof up!

Structuraly we would have been fine with 2 x 4 braces and 6 x 6 posts. We went with 6 x 6 braces and 8 x 8 posts just for fun. Failure is unlikely.
