My sister was telling me about a spalted cherry bowl she bought in Maryland for $120. Figured she would appreciate a spalted maple bowl. This one was really punky. Terrible tearout even with sharp tools, 1# shellac and fancy gouge techniques. The picture is the bowl after absorbing about 1/4 cup of danish oil. Not sure this will be dry enough to finish/buff before Christmas. Such is life, I'll just blame it on the mail. This one is H-3 7/8 x W-5 3/4.

Chip,

Now that is a bowl worth having!

I really like the way the spalting turned out and makes for a wonderful piece. You will make your sister very proud.

Good work!

Very nice bowl...
BUT, You actually let you sister get away with buying a bowl instead of asking you to make one... LOL

Chip, I like the form and that is some cool looking spalting.

Have you ever tried Minwax wood hardener on punky wood? It works great for the tearout and for the finish.

Wonderful piece Chip! I'm sure it'll take the place of the purchased one. Nicely done.
