Holloween 2004 - turned my first pen. Got my first lathe in Novemer 2004, but haven't had much time on it due to moving around the Midwest and traveling for work. Hope to get more time on it this year! (and all the other fine tools I've collected).

About 2 years. I figure another 20 more and I might, just might, get to the point where I am occasionally satisfied with my bowl and spindle turning skills.

However, I am clearly making progress. I have now mastered the "Launch the bowl through the garage window" skill.

Kent - You get two extra value points if the window was closed at the time.

I've discovered that this is why a "Chuck" and "Chuck it through the Window" mean the same thing. :p

About three years ago my wife drug me to a school auction. Well they had lots of shop equipment for sale and since I had never owned or turned on a lathe I bought a used Delta for $100. I had to have four other guys help me load it onto the truct and I had to dismantle it to get it into my shop. I now own two Deltas and one Jet mini. I use all three and I still want one with larger possibilities. My wife still smiles every time I bring my latest project for the shop for her inspection, what a gal to have on my side.

Did a little bit a year ago and stopped. Wasn't getting good results because I didn't know how to use a skew chisel. Got the PSI DVD and learned how from that.

A month ago I finally got around to turning the ten pen kits I got from the Freedom Pen project. I've now done another 19 on top of those. If it wasn't so cold in the shop and too much to do to get ready for Christmas, my wife be mad at how much time I'd be spending out there.

Frank Parker

I bought my lathe in Febuary and been turning like a mad man ever since, so much so that I've wore my Craftsman lathe out and had to order another lathe, oneway 2436 this time.

Tom - Not really. Just crank that lathe up a bit faster and you'll get where you want to go all that much sooner.:D

Seriously, about a year. Some "spotty" history of turning prior to that but, I didn't know what I was doing.

First turning in 1996 with a pen turning class hosted by the inimitable Bill Grumbine--still have the pen in my bed-side table. Didn't turn for awhile after that. Bought a lathe in about 2001. (HFT 34706) Bought the next one 6 months later. (OneWay 1018) Bought the next (and likely last one) in Feb 2002. (Stubby 750) My "serious" turning started with the OneWay since that was about the same time as I took David Ellsworth's course, so I guess you can say, about 4 years now, give or take.
