I see an add in the paper today listing cherry and walnut rough sawn 8' and 12' various widths at $3.00 per board foot. What is the going rate. Is this an ok price if the lumber appears OK? Allen

I'd buy it if, after looking at it - it was what I wanted - amount of heart vs sap, few knots etc. What thickness? 4/4? Thicker? Ask how long it's been drying (undoubtedly air dried) Experts, help me out, but I think you'd want this to be 8% - 12% moisture content?

If after all that, you want it, buy it. $3 per bf is a good price.

In these parts walnut can be had considerably cheaper. Rough cherry at $3 bf is not bad. Alot has to do with the size of the boards the cut and the quality as previously mentioned. As Gary said, you would probably want to check the moisture content (8-12* is ideal) if you plan on using it anytime soon.

Hi tod.. I may be having a brain spasam, but when you say mbf are you saying 1000 bd feet or 100 bd feet? if you are saying per 1000 bd feet I would like to pick some up at 25.5 cents per bd ft!

alan it does also depend on if you have to take a log run or can cherry pick the pile. personally I would say 3 per bd ft and cherry picking allowed would be decent - I normally do not sell below that point.

as for the OP, is that a good price? It depends. Is this single-board retail, or wholesale big-quanity lots? For cherry and walnut, is this steamed or unsteamed - both these species are often steamed to darken the sapwood.
