I just heard of a recall on Porter Cable circular saws so I went to Consumers Reports and got the recall. Here it is:

*Porter-Cable circular saws

Lower blade guard could stick in open position, exposing user to severe laceration hazard.

Products: 196,000 Porter-Cable 7 1/4-inch MAG-Saws sold 3/04 through 11/05 at home centers and hardware stores for $130 to $160, including the following: model number 324MAG, bearing serial numbers 10001 through 108962; model 325MAG, serial numbers 10001 through 014712; model 423MAG, serial numbers 10001 through 100371; and model 424MAG, serial numbers 10001 through 012690. Model and serial numbers are both located on label on top of saw. Units with a "T" stamped under handle have been inspected and are not subject to recall. No injuries have been reported.

What to do: Stop using saw immediately. Contact Porter-Cable at 800-949-7930 or go to www.porter-cable.com for location of the nearest service center to receive a free inspection and, if necessary, repair.

There has recently been some discussion about table saws and Craftsman has come up so I thought I would include this one also:

*Sears Craftsman table saw rip-fence assembly

The fence assembly could come loose, causing the material being cut to kick back and injure the operator.

Products: 41,800 units sold from 8/02 to 11/04 at Sears stores. The complete table saw with the suspect assembly is model 137.21830, which sold for about $400. The rip-fence assembly sold separately for about $40. The rip fence is a metal guide that keeps the material being sawed from shifting side to side as the operator pushes it into the cutting blade. The rip fence is made of silver-colored aluminum, is 31 inches long, and has a locking handle with a black die-cast aluminum head. Sears has received 230 reports of the rip-fence coming loose with no injuries.

What to do: Call the Sears Craftsman Helpline at 800-843-1682 for free replacement parts and installation instructions.

There are similar recalls on Hitachi and Makita circular saws and the Dewalt framing saw. Feel free to email me if you would like more info on those.

Hope this helps somebody.
