Never before heard of trimming plugs before installing them. Trimming them after installation is super easy using a sharp chisel.

I guess I should have been wordier! Of course I flushed them after they were glued in place....but the plugs were so long that they hit the concealed fastener before the plugs were in far enough to make a gapless fit due to the tapered sides. I needed to shorten the tapered end to get a nice invisible fit. If you try to put in a vise or just grab it with normal pliers, it flattens the plug and you don't get a nice fit.

BTW, I never use tapered plugs, always prefer to use the Fuller plug cutters and counterbores--no need to trim before installation.
