"What's the best kind of wood?"
Answer: "Free Wood!"
A friend gave me a bunch of wood, including some teak which I used for a variety of things, including some cutting boards.
Some of the wood is a species that I couldn't even guess what it is - but some of it had some nice figure and it would polish up nicely. I chose some of the nicest wood and made a jewelry box for his wife as thanks for the gift. Here's how it came out.
You can see the grain running around the box. I made a tray for the inside. I videoed the making of the box and posted the videos on my website (http://www.mikes-woodwork.com/) (warning: the video is in three parts, each almost an hour). The production has some problems - I have to set up the camera and then show the work. If the camera is a bit off I don't know it until I review the video.
