I had a couple of chunks of Cherry to play around with recently... Glad to hear comments, criticisms, suggestions, etc on the bowls. You can critique the pics if you'd like, but I know they ain't that great...;)

The wife ordered up this first bowl for herself... came from a log off her folks' place not too far from here.

9-1/2" tall... 3-3/8" high... 9/16" thickness... sanded thru 600 and buffed...

This second bowl came from a chunk of Cherry I swapped Dennis P out of a while back. The blank was pretty thick and I hated to turn it all away. So I tried a different rim - took a suggestion from Travis, saw a few bowls here and there, and saw one Dennis did recently (that he hasn't posted any pics of) - and got some inspiration to try something different. Jim & Travis say the fat rim needs carved, but I'm too chicken right now to try it...:D maybe later after I'm practiced up...

8" wide... 3" tall... 3/4" rim that tapers quickly to 3/8" wall/bottom... sanded thru 600 and buffed...

Mark the first one is great, I like the grooves. Form is great as well. The second one I like but as Jim & Travis have said the rim needs something. Carving would work but maybe some turned grooves or something would work. Always enjoy your posts.

Mark...You have such a nice touch and a good eye. I wish I had those qualities. I love the overall form of the first one and the rings really set it off. Very pretty piece.
The second one is definitely unique, although, I'd have to agree that the rim is begging for a little decor. If you're skeered to carve it (I know I would be) then how 'bout you chuck it up again and texture it? I saw a guy the other night on the DIY channel do some texturing with some fairly simple tools. He made it look easy....But even HE said it was difficult.

Mark, they are both great. I particularly like the first one. The second one is begging for some embellishment on the wide rim...texturing, carving or burning (maybe even scorching then texturing?) But then I know the feeling of being chicken...I keep waiting for a lousy piece of wood to try that stuff. Problem is I have never really seen a lousy piece of wood!:D

I'll have to agree with the others about the second one's rim. I also agree about the first one being very nice.
