I don't consider myself an expert woodworker, so I try to refrain from giving too much advice at the "Creek." But, a couple of weeks ago I started putting up some tongue and groove on the walls of my shop. I didn't have a pencil handy, but, since I had been using some rigid foam panels, I had an old kitchen knife on my bench that I was using to cut the panels. I used the knife to mark a line. The difference in accuracy between using a knife and a pencil is major. I'm consistantly getting nice snug fits with very little effort. So, I thought I would pass this on to any non-experts out there like me.

Get a knife!!!

I know this sounds elementary to most of you, but it is a welcome discovery for me.

That is great advice, I have a Japanese marking knife, the blade is sharpened on one side only, so the back part of the knife is flat, and it is very easy to get an accurate mark.

Some of the nicest marking knives on the planet are available from our own Mr. Anderson in the Neander Forum...

As an "ex" machinist I use a height set with a venier scale. Gives me a scribe line and an exact measurment at the same time. As I recall, a scribe line is .010 thick. Could be thinner but that's as I remember it from 20+ years ago.

Merry Christmas

Me too I guess. I woulda never thunk it.....although, from everyone else's posts, it looks like we've just been sheltered. I think I'll turn a couple tonight and see how they look. Thanks for the post John!!:)

Ok...I made one. This is Cocobolo and the knife is HSS that I ground to sorta match what CTW was doing. This was a fun little project. I started a thread over in the Turners Forum. I hope to get some critiques so I can improve on the design. If any of you have any pointers, I'd love to hear it! Thanks :)
