Hey everyone. Finally got a chance to get started on my wooden, hard-sided gun case for the Ducks Unlimited banquet. To bring you up to speed...
My original plan was to make the case out of walnut with a laser engraved maple insert on the top of the case. After gluing up the panels for the top and bottom of the case I decided they were a little BLAH and needed something more. I have now decided to band the top and bottom panels with maple as well to dress them up a bit. This would sem to be no problem on the 2 edges of the panel as they would be simple edge grain glue-ups. I am worried about the banding on the 2 ends as this would be end grain to edge grain glue-up and not very strong. Can I mill mating rabit joints in the end of the panel and edge of the banding to increase the strength? See my crude sketch I've attached if you don't understand. Thanks.
