Hi Folks,
I was wondering what those of you with a Benchcrafted vise and a shop that is not climate controlled have done on the vise handle to prevent rust. Benchcrafted manual suggests linseed oil, flax oil, or paint. I am thinking of black Rustoleum. Anyway I would be interested to hear what others have done.
Thanks
Izzy

My metal vise handle gets a bit of oil applied every once in a while.

Paste waste mixed with thinner. The adhesion is better. Had eliminated rust on my end.

I baked linseed oil onto my wheel and screw, same way you 'cure' a cast iron pan.

Worked great.

Best,

Consider POR15.

Thanks for all the ideas. The flax oil seems promising to me.

Hmmm move to AZ have to think on that!

After more thought the paste wax with thinner sounds easy to give a try.

In a thread about what to use to prevent rust on a TS top, someone suggested clear polyurethane, thinned to a "wiping oil" (cut maybe 50% with mineral spirits). My TS lives in a barn along the coast where we get heavy dew every night, and I had been using 50-50 drain oil and kerosene after every use and then wiping it off when I use the saw, but I've gotten tired of that routine, so I tried the polyurethane and MS "wiping varnish" and it seems to work pretty well...but not sure how fast it wears off.
