I am rebuilding my stairway and putting new risers on.
The ends are out of square and not fitting all that great. The good part is that we are painting the risers
the same color as the woodwork.

What should I use to fill the gaps where the riser meets the woodwork base ?
Latex caulking and putty knife it smooth
Wood Filler and sand it when dry
Any other suggestions ?

I can't think of any filler that would be invisible even after painting (think cracking). If you can't replace the risers, then how about scribing a piece of 1/8" hardboard & gluing it to the face of the old riser. Then just use latex caulk in the corners.

Cutting new risers that fit would be the best solution, but if that is out of the question you might try WoodEpox. That's a two-part product that you mix in equal volumes. Overfill the cavities & then trim back with a plane or chisel for best results. If you time it right, the material cuts easily, like hard cheese.

Live and learn. I just cut one new one and that is the way to go.
I should have taken more time the first time. And did more research on how to do it Right.
The video helped A Lot. Thanks
I'm glad I didn't have them all done....just a few.
Thanks for the advise

Good for you. Backing up and redoing things is always better and sometimes quicker too.
