Just out of curiosity how was the depth gauge on a moving filister manufactured. I've always assumed it was cast from molten brass. but is it possible it was worked from a solid piece? Also, does anyone manufacture them today.

David, I've made a few from solid brass. Just saw and file. Also, brass angle is convenient to shape into a depth stop.

There are many ways. Some are even put together by soldering them together.

The methods of adjusting and holding a depth stop in place are also many.

Are you attempting to make one or replace one?

They were 1 piece sand cast in molten brass.

I need to replace one and yes, I was thinking about having a go at making one.

David, post a photo of what you want/need, and we will give an opinion on what is possible.

Depending if one is broken or if it missing, you may have to post an image of the vacancy to be filled. There are likely at least a dozen different ways to fulfill your needs.

If you can cast brass, that may be the way to go.
