by clicking on mark forums read and now don't see a way to get things back to normal.
They will be "back to normal" as soon as someone posts in a given thread...it will then once again show as "unread" until you, well...read it. I use this feature multiple times daily. It just marks any threads you have not read as "read" so they are no longer highlighted. The same thing will happen automatically if you walk away from your computer after accessing SMC and a certain period of time passes with no activity.
