Got this kit from CSU and used some of the maple burl I had on it. The burl is stabilized with ploy and buffed on the Beal wheels. This will be a present to a brother. Now I need to make me one!

Sparky, that is great work! I've got a nice one like that, but I didn't make it...:-) It was a gift from Big Mike.

I've put off making a scratch awl ... but that burl looks wonderful.
After xmas gifts are made (and the demilune table, and the serving tray) a scratch awl is next!.

Could you explain the stabilization process? I’m thinking of making a couple of 2” dia. knobs out of maple burl. Not being a wood turner, I don’t know anything about it. :o

Thanks for the link Sparky. I will give the Minwax Wood Hardener a try. I'll try the "float in a jar untill they sink" method. I don't have a vacuum.
