Wooden Dowels - Lower priced?

I'm looking for "cheaper" ways of buying wooden dowels. Locally, a 1/2" x 48" wood dowel is about $1.85 each. I'm looking to buy about 50 at one time. Do any of you have any experience with buying bulk dowels online that doesn't cost this much?

For 50, they're $1.16 each, but if you can spring for 100, they come down to $.77 each - no shipping.

What is great about this site is there is a choice of wood species.

With inexpensive dowels "made of quality wood" you never know what the wood might be.
