I have to admit to being a keen observer of the weather (otherwise known as a weather nut I am told...) My favourite weather phenomenon is the rainbow. What I did not know until today is that the angle of the light from your point of view to the water droplets and back to the sun or moon must be 42 degrees for the rainbow to be visible. By sheer coincidence, I live very close to 42 degrees south which means rainbows are way more common than in other latitudes. We even get moonbows when it is lightly snowing on the full moon in winter. Anyone living around 42 degrees north aware of a higher occurrence of rainbows? Cheers

We are at a little above 45º North latitude and see plenty of rainbows. My biggest regret is not having my camera with me more often.

The sun came out while walking to my shop in the rain. Also being a lover of rainbows it got me to look around. It took me a moment to find it. Didn't expect it to be in the trees. Ran in to the house to grab the camera and got a few shots as it was starting to fade.

We're at 42.7 North, and I'll spot several rainbows per year. I'd probably see more if I paid closer attention.

I had not seen the 42* figure before, but I suspect it would have more to do with time of day (angle of sun in the sky) than with latitude.

Here's a double I caught just a couple weeks ago. The photos never seem to do justice to the real thing (must be my camera - couldn't be the photographer).

You are correct that it isn’t the latitude- it's the angle of the sun relative to your position, and with the earth's axis tilted in relationship to it's revolution around the sun, you are not going to have a constant 42 degree sun at 42 degrees lattitude. The best time for rainbows is in the morning and evening just after sunrise, and just before sunset. What is key is you have to have water droplets in the air, which is typically rain, but could be a cloud. We get rainbows here very often, and my daughter thinks I'm magic because when I see it raining in the distance as we sit on the porch having breakfast, I often see it raining in the distance to the west and say, "If you watch out there, you're soon going to see a rainbow." Magically, daddy is right every time. :-) I'll see if I have a pic on my phone to share.


edit: found some. Looking west in the morning, and a double rainbow looking east in the afternoon.

Most rainbows I saw was in Denalli Park in Alaska. About 63 degrees north. I worked there one summer. Rained a lot, so lots of rainbows. very common to see complete doubles. Best I saw was two complete rainbows most of a third some forth an a little 5th. Not the colors reverse with each bow.

It didn't make much sense to me, so googled.

"Also, the sun must be no more than 53 degrees above the horizon for rainbows to appear. This means the sun must be low in the sky. Ireland, at 55 degrees north latitude, is much farther north than Hartford, which sits at less than 42 degrees north. So the sun will always be closer to the horizon in Ireland, usually under the 53-degree limit that rainbows need."

42 degrees latitude just makes it more likely that rainbows will occur. Here is a link to the article that caught my attention. It also explains the physics. Cheers

Here is a photo of a really bright rainbow I took out west near Craters of the Moon National Monument.

It was a full double rainbow, but due to the late time of day it was too wide to get all of it in one shot.

It was a full double rainbow, but due to the late time of day it was too wide to get all of it in one shot.


I've seen countless raibows in my time- literally see at least one a week- but that's one of the most vibrant I think I've seen. Nice shot.

I have to admit to being a keen observer of the weather (otherwise known as a weather nut I am told...) My favourite weather phenomenon is the rainbow. What I did not know until today is that the angle of the light from your point of view to the water droplets and back to the sun or moon must be 42 degrees for the rainbow to be visible. By sheer coincidence, I live very close to 42 degrees south which means rainbows are way more common than in other latitudes. We even get moonbows when it is lightly snowing on the full moon in winter. Anyone living around 42 degrees north aware of a higher occurrence of rainbows? Cheers

40-42 deg depending on the color. The biggest thing is the position of the sun which determines how high the rainbow is off the horizon. We live on the top of a hill facing the east and get fantastic rainbows since the weather moves from west to east and when the rain clouds pass us in the afternoon sunlight comes from the clear sky in the west and illuminates the rain that just passed us going east. I've taken dozens of shots from my deck such as this:

I am really enjoying the great photos. In winter here we get a light and constant haze of snow in the air some days and rainbows will last for hours. Makes for a bit of a slow paced action free video however...

Does anyone else see 'moon bows' for want of a better term? We see 2 or 3 each winter when the full moon is rising, it is a clear night and there is the snow haze in the air over the mountain but not over us. They look pure white at first glance but if you look closely the colours are there. Cheers

I live a few miles south of the 40 Latitude line. (originally the line between Pa and Md.) We have frequent rainbows here but usually only late afternoon and evening. A morning rainbow would be exceedingly rare, but they do occur. Also rarely are our rainbows the brilliant colors shown in some of your photos. Maybe once a year.

What really makes Tasmania special is not that it's 42 degrees South, but that it's the Southernmost part of Australia (and that it is relatively rainy compared to much of Australia). You need three things to get a rainbow: rain actively in some quarter of the sky, the sun above the horizon in the opposite quarter of the sky and below 53 or so degrees altitude, and an observer between the two with the sun roughly at his or her back. The further South or North you go, the larger fraction of time the sun spends below 50 degrees, so the more time you satisfy the the second requirement. If there were a big rainy island South of Tasmania at 55S latitude, it would experience more rainbows than Tasmania.

He never spoke about his service much but I do recall him talking about seeing full-circle rainbows from the air. Being a Catalina, 'from the air' was probably skimming the waves. Has anyone else seen a rainbow like this or is my recollection getting a bit fanciful after 50 years or so? Cheers

I saw one from the air when the sun was overhead but it was from higher than skimming. There was a shadow of the airplane in the center. I even took a photo but I'd have to hunt for it - I must have forgotten to put it in my Rainbows folder. But actually, all rainbows would be circles if there was no ground and the water and sun was it the right place.

You can generate a close circle rainbow spraying water mist with the sun behind.
