I'm looking for any tips or techniques to engrave pine, while minimizing wood darkening or char. The idea being to raster away negative space behind the ink / paint. It may be a matter of experimenting with different inks and power settings to achieve this effect. But any tips would be greatly appreciated!

My guess would be that they used a rubber based paint. Laser etched away the background, then soda blasted the material to remove the char.
Thats my guess, and I’m sticking to it.

Yes, I experimented with this in the past and found that running at your top speed with low power, making several or many passes will do the job without the char. It will also be cleaner if you paint, cover with transfer tape, and do a shallow vector cut just into the wood first. Then weed the paper off of the background (leave on the letters/logo) and do the same engraving.
