i'm building an extension on my ts to house a router and i'm looking for options for the top. i'm having trouble finding any sort of laminate, and i've discovered a plastics dealer in huntsville that has sheets of 3/8 or 1/2" polycarbonate or plexi.
the options i'm thinking of are as follows: birch top with a poly insert, a whole top of poly or plexiglass, or (last resort) buy some of the prelaminated stuff at the bigbox and add an insert.
thanx

Brad, both Home Depot and Lowes carry plastic laminate in full or quarter sheets. One carries Formica brand and the other carries Wilsonart brand. This is usually in the back of the store near the pre-molded countertops and is an easy display to miss. All of the application accessories are located with it, including solvent-based contact cement, application rollers and a J-roller if you do not already have one. You'll also want 2 router bits to dress the edges...one a flush trim bit you probably already have and a beveled edge cutter designed for this application.

At the two Lowes from which I've bought Wilsonart laminate, the sheets were near the plumbing department along with some prefab counter tops. They should also have the contact cement and J-rollers nearby. Some Home Depots may not carry laminate depending on the size of the store. There's one Home Depot near me that's an older, smaller store and they don't carry laminate sheets. However, the larger Home Depot stores seem to keep there laminate near the kitchen cabinet and/or paint area. Good luck.
