New to me Grizzly G0566 21" 3hp Bandsaw

I found this on CraigsList. It's over 10 years old but is in very good condition.

This saw has never cut wood. The place that was selling it used it for cutting foam to go inside Pelican Cases till they found a place that cut it to fit cheaper. It sat in the corner of their warehouse unused for most of it's time there.


Now... to get this 581lb beast off the trailer and onto the mobile base so I can tune it up and start using it.

My choices to get the bandsaw off the trailer boiled down to the following...

#1) Invite some friends over and manhandle it off the trailer possibly injuring them and damaging the saw. Plus there's the cost of beer to get them to show up.

#2) I noticed there are eyebolts on the top and an I-Beam above it in the shop. Looks like a chain hoist and a chain to attach it to the beam might be a better solution.

hard to beat the chain hoist for simplicity. I had several points to hang one in the garage as needed at the last place. Nice tool gloat. :D

Well... it was less than 1/2 of what the new version costs and I live in the Fort Worth area, so you didn't miss out on a deal.

I have had to spend a hundred or so on new tires, new bearings for the blade guides, and a few other parts including the spur gears for the gear boxes for the cranks that raise/lower the blade guide and tilt the table. It looks like someone twisted the cranks while the locking mechanisms were still engaged and stripped the spur gears. All is good now.

Looks like some BOESHIELD Rust Free, Scotch-Brite, and elbow grease will clean up the table.

After it's clean, I have some Johnson Paste Wax I could apply or should I use BOESHIELD T-9 Rust & Corrosion Protection?

I always put a layer of T9 followed by Paste wax.

Since the bandsaw will move around the shop, I decided to plumb the two inlets together to make connection to the portable dust collector easier.

I think this looks pretty clean.

Nice find. My new bandsaw showed up today and it's about 270 or so lbs and got it to the basement on an appliance dolly. I thought I was going to have some man-handling but that machine is a monster. Enjoy it!!!

I have the 5 HP version of that saw also, though with the electro brake. The GO531B.

It's literally everything I could hope for in a bandsaw. Wonderfully balanced, easy to adjust, holds alignment, etc etc... I've read that sometimes the wheels are not well balanced (easy enough to fix) but mine are perfect.

One tip: The motor pulley is very small, and so hard to get the belts adjusted "just right." If you have it too tight, it will cause vibration.
It's my only niggle with this fine machine.


BTW - In case you didn't know, Grizzly sells "Euro" style guides for these saws now. I'm not sure how they compare to what you'd find on an Agazzani, but they look decent. Personally, I'm totally happy with the Grizzly bearing guides.

Oh, and I did the "invite some friends and lots of beer" method to get it here.

We actually threw the thing into the back of my Tacoma, then pulled it out again, with everything attached except the table. :eek:

I'm tempted to say "NEVER AGAIN!" - except I know myself far too well. :o

The new Asian stuff will work for decades just like the older European and American stuff. I have tools from the 1930's in my shop (bandsaw and drill press). This will outlast us all taken care of. Good get. Also...I love the green and white scheme that Griz uses.

One other thing I forgot:

When I got mine, it was about 6 months old and had been used by a serious hobbyist.
- But those black tires were completely gone. I think the grizzly bean counters decided that was a good place to save money.

Get yourself some really good tires, asap. I highly recommend the "Blue Max" type, which can be found for very reasonable cost on Ebay, from the NJ guy who makes them. nice and thick, and they repel dust quite well.


-And while you're at it, you can check the balance of your wheels. I've read many reports of Grizzly wheels being a little off, though mine were dead-nuts perfect.
Easy to fix, if needed.
