As in for pulling weeds in the yard? Sorry I’ve never seen one

Yep, spent many hours earning my allowance with one of those. You spear the dirt/weed at the base in order to get out the root.

My neighbors are gonna be so glad I found these!

Okay ever seen one of These? Made of a sort of heavy cardboard

The cardboard thing looks like something to hold a piece above a surface for painting. A side that has just been painted can be set on three or four of these with minimal touch up needed where the points touch the article being painted.

It may also be a piece used to hold things safely apart in a shipping box.

I’ve seen something like that for painting, makes sense.

Dandelion puller. The knife looks like a cheese knife, possibly repurposed . The stone may be for a scythe.

Mike,

Like everyone else, a weed digger, what we call a dandelion digger. I still use one.

I would say these are asparagus knives. In picking asparagus, we stab the shoot at ground level with the forked tool. The silver plate knife would be good for this, but not for a weeder because weeders are used to pry; the butter knife would break. The sturdier tools are sometimes sold as asparagus knife/weeder, used for both purposes. Asparagus knives are sharpened so they usually have a thin flat blade like the one on the left. If you search "asparagus knives" you will see lots of examples.

There is a scythe stone in one picture.

The little cardboard easel looks like it was for displaying something. I've seen those stones, and what they were for, but it's on the long list of things I've forgotten.

Here’s another one, came with a drawer full of stuff from a guy who did furniture and he said “you know about these, right??” Of course I said I did but I didn’t and I still don’t. Do you?

The best response when someone asks a question like that is to say, "you likely know more about them than me."

If you are reluctant to admitting a lack of knowledge, chances are less new knowledge will present itself.

It has a resemblance to a fleam knife.

Thanks!! He didn’t seem like he’d be into bloodletting, maybe there’s some application with wood stuff.

As far as reluctance to admit my ignorance, I am the person who started this thread after all!

Cheers!!

That knife could also be a ‘steel eraser’. I have one that came with an old drafting set. Keffel and Esser show them in an old catalog I just saw on a quick google image search for steel eraser.

I was thinking the same thing. Draftsmen used to make drawings for blue prints with black ink on a heavy clear film. Then they put this clear film over photosensitive paper which would turn blue where the light hit. The inked areas on the film would show up as white on the "blueprint", and multiple copies could be made from the one original.

When the guys made a mistake they would scrape away the dried ink with these knives. I have a few of these but I can't remember where they are to compare.

You guys are so cool to share all this knowledge! Where would I be...

This isn’t a thing exactly but has anyone ever heard of this?

Sorry if my comment upset you.

We are all ignorant, just on different subjects. (if my recollector is working, Will Rogers said that.)

No, not in the least. When I ask someone for help I have learned to take it on his terms. Thanks for the input, it’s much appreciated.

RE: the Fleam Knife, in my experience, just because it is in a wood workers kit doesn't mean it wasn't originally used for something else, like a physicians kit. I have a potato masher that I use as a mallet, old ice picks that I use as awls, and I have reached for the scalpel in my old Biology lab dissection kit from time to time. I can see myself leaving that on my workbench someday and someone coming in behind me and throwing in drawer with files or a box with plane parts. I was given a rather eclectic collection of old tools that included chisels, with pipe wrenches and even a few old leather craft tools.

Thus my comment towards encouraging people to tell you their story when they ask if you know about something. Many tools develop crossover uses from one trade to another.

Sure a few moments of my time have been wasted listening to someone tell me what was already known. Many times something quite different than the expected was related. Often times the reward for being attentive over a few minutes of boredom was the story teller saying they may have another item of interest to bring out.
