I spent a few hours on Saturday with with my 6-year-old daughter making some turned Christmas ornaments. I pretty much just made them up as I went along. The snowman with the brown hat is poplar with an trans-tint hat and lacquer finish. The other snowman has india ink for the hat color and tung oil with lacquer. The bell is a mix of scraps- cherry, mahogany, poplar, pine. The angel is poplar with magnolia wings. I'll probably make a few more next weekend, since the lathe is already out and I've got a big barrel full of scraps.

What do you think?

Very cool. Homemade ornaments are the best. When I was a kid, my mom helped us make ornaments out of empty milkweed pods. We would paint them gold, put in some cotton for snow and cut little figures and scenes out from old Christmas cards. We still have them after all these years. Did the same thing with walnut shells too.
