Hopefully someone out there with a lot more knowledge about musical instruments can help me with this one.

I've been tasked with building a kids(?) musical percussion-type instrument that's basically a tissue sized wooden box with strategic holes or slots cut into the top so that when struck with some type of drum stick, it makes a melodic sound.

Does anyone know what the proper name is for this type of thing? Or better yet, have either some pictures that they're willing to share or possibly know where I could find a plan?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is what your talking about but I found this web site that shows this instrument. It's a wind instrument, so I'm not sure if it's what your looking for.

Peter - I am a musical moron  but, do happen to know one of the associate professors of music at Arkansas Tech University who is a very talented percussionist. According to him, the instrument you describe is a log drum.

Looks like the collective wisdom of the Creek has come through once again! Thanks for all of the responses -- it looks like with the assistance you've provided I'll be able to come through with something presentable.
