Installed it this week at a dentists office. She wanted an open design with clean lines to keep it spacious. I'm happy with how it turned out. The railing is made with stainless steel bars.

That's why I enlisted my dad to help me. He's made hundreds of staircases and is an expert at it.

I try to be. I don't want to have to shut down my company for lack of work ;)

Wow! What type of wood is that?

According to my supplier it's American Elm. I've never worked with it before but I really like it. It's lightly stained to make the make the wood grain pop.

I should hope so because my dad helped with it and he's an expert at this.

I only ask because where I live the stairs cannot be less than six inches wide and your open risers you cannot have a 4" sphere pass thru them

A beautiful set of stairs you have built there

Are you kidding me? I never thought stairs could be so beautiful!!!

... it's American Elm.

I'm not familiar with American elm but I have used grey elm and it has a fantastic grain .. very chatoyant and takes stain well.

That staircase is so graceful. ..Just as you say, clean lines and open. The ogee in the hand rail and the string wall exemplify its grace. Congratulations on a laborious job well done. I love it.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. A lot of credit goes to my dad, without him helping me on my first staircase I doubt the outcome would've been this nice.

Like your Dad I have built hundreds of stairs, and I can say with authority that you have created one outstanding stair. Really beautiful - it's one thing, not a bunch of parts - it has balance and harmony. One question: you have 4 winders in the lower turn and 5 winders in the upper. Space considerations? Aesthetics? Or....

My dad actually did the layout to keep the same height for all the steps.

My dad . . .

You're lucky to have such a mentor. I never had one and realize I have missed a few lessons here and there along the way which could have forestalled some issues. I'm glad there is this site to fill in the gaps, as a sounding board and a wealth of knowledge and experience. You teach me a lot about design and ambition.

Perfection! Now put a sign up that stops anyone using it so it stays that way.:)

Fantastic work. I'm a little surprised that its Elm. Elm is pretty difficult to find in the US as Dutch Elm disease has pretty much decimated the native species here.

No, it's not in the US. And yes, it's the main stair in the room. It leads up to the office.
