View Full Version : Burning confetti lamps....

Alright......I made two confetti oil lamps for the LOML for our anniversary. They burn fine, but the smoke like CRAZY. I have the wick about 1/16" below the top of the glass and they STILL smoke. I am using the Ultra Pure lamp oil as prescribed. I can't lower the wick any more or I will never get it to light. I have the long part down inside the bottle and the short part exposed. It won't work the other way around as the wick isn't long enough to have the long tube piece exposed for a more elevated flame.

So what's my trouble? Toss the wicks and order some new ones? Don't light them at all, they're just there to look at? I gave up a short time back. Now, I'm looking to the experts that have already been using these things.

I have never had that problem Dennis. I have my wicks flush with the top of the glass wick holder.

Jim,

I've tried with the wicks slightly above the glass, even with the top of the glass, slightly below the edge of the glass and now....down inside the glass. The "instructions" said to have it lower than the edge of the glass for a better clean burn. PPPPFFFFFTTTTTTT..!!!! I ain't seen nothing but a sooty, smoky burn since lighting them. After several attempts to get them to burn clean, I blew them out in frustration.:(

Dennis, I am wondering if you have a bottle of contaminated oil? Mine don't smoke at all. I use "Lamplight Ultra-Pure Liquid Parrafin Candle and Lamp Liquid"

Could be true Carole. I'll get some new oil today and see if that makes any difference. Thing is? I use this same exact oil in our large oil lamps that we use when the power goes out and they don't smoke. Oh well....We'll see today.

Hi Dennis

Did you try trimming the wick with a very sharp knife? Sometimes they are a little ragged, and that will cause them to smoke as well.

Didn't know that would cause it. I always hit mine with a razor blade before inserting them just because I liked them to be nice and even. Guess that's why I never get smoke!
