What off the shelf glue would you recommend for attaching 10oz leather to wood vice jaws?

Hide Glue Bruce. No, I'm not kidding. Hot will tack up faster but the cold out of a bottle, preferably Old Brown Glue not titebond, will work too.

If you ever wanted to reverse it (i.e. change the leather), hide glue would make your life much easier, as it will release with water.

barge glue is the common one used with leather. If gluing to wood - you could prob get away with using tite bond too.

I used regular old white pva glue to put my strop together. It's been holding for 2 years no issue.

Hot hide glue. Fast, easy, reversible.

Thanks, I'm glad I asked. I'll head over to woodworkers supply next week and pick up some hide glue.

I used contact cement- the same kind you glue a counter top down with. I used it on wood and metal vise jaws, and had to remove one to make a change and darned near didn't get it off.

Sounds like you can use what ever's handy!

Paul Sellers would probably use double sided tape. I used it for my strop. Holds great.

3M 77 spray adhesive has worked for me for many years. Plenty of grip to be nearly permanent, but can be removed if the leather needs to be replaced.

+1. Or strong double faced tape, not the carpet kind.

Hide glue or old brown glue is no good because it's water based unless rust is not a concern or you are attaching leather to wooden jaws.
