Friend of mine brought me a couple of boards left over from a window treatment job.

The wood feel light in the hand, it is dark brown, and the grain pattern looks like red oak. It even has open end-grain pores too.

It smells just like bar-b-que sauce.

The photos show the endgrain of a piece I just cut off.

I've never seen this wood before. Any ideas what it is?

It is “torrified” wood. Usually done with Ash and Poplar. Just heat treated wood.

It is "thermally modified" wood, google Northland Forrest products

Tree wood. Lol. I honestly don't know but at first glance it looked like composite.
