Hey everyone,

I am new to the forum and have been delving into some basic woodworking over the past year. The big issues I have been running into is finding a source other than the orange and blue stores for wood. The past two Christmases I have ordered from woodworkers source to get something more exotic than pine and oak. Does anyone know where I can find good hardwoods in the south Georgia/Tallahassee area? Thanks in advance for your help!!

There is a cabinet maker by the name of Paul Fontaine on South Adams St. He sells domestic hardwoods and is very reasonable. I don't recall his company's name. I live in SW Ga. about 1 hour and 15 or so minutes from him and buy from him when needed. He has had red oak, walnut, poplar, maple, and cherry, white oak, cypress. If you get up with him, he will order whatever you need. I believe he gets a truck every week.
I don't have his number right off hand, but see if you can google him.
Good luck!
Steve

You might want to try the woodfinder (http://woodfinder.com/) to see what places are near you. Or, just a google search for "lumber near Tallahassee".

A few options....

Check out Rebel Ventures, Inc. Services and Consulting. Call ahead to set up a time to see what they have. They have locally salvaged stuff, but it is likely to include some amazingly beautifully figured lumber. He salvages trees that are down or damaged and has an eye for beautiful figure. I bought some really beautiful curly cherry, chinkapin oak, and ancient pecan from them. The wood was exceptional and the prices were very good. Martin and Paisley are nice folks. https://www.facebook.com/rebelventuresinc/

In town there in Capital City Lumber. They seemed nice and said they'd order stuff for me, but I have not actually bought from them. https://www.capitolcitylumber.com/

Try Wiregrass millwork and lumber https://www.wire-grass.com/ and another lumber/cabinet place (out of the woodwork) right across the road they both said they'd order anything.

I heard a rumor that they might be closed so call first, but try Redwood Bay Lumber in Blountstown. I was there a few months ago and they were open then. They stock a limited number of species including cherry and walnut in the main lumber section and have a small exotic section. Prices didn't seem great, but weren't terrible. I have bought quite a bit of lumber from them and they reliably stock cherry, walnut, poplar, oak, maple, etc. While limited in stock, they are the closest thing to a fully stocked basic lumber sources that I have found.

BTW there is a woodworking club in Tallahassee and a woodturners club if you are interested.

Thank you everyone for the responses. This will give me a good base to start from. Paying for shipping is always the killer when ordering online. Trying to get away from that.

To supplement the above good recommendations, if you are vacationing or otherwise traveling, keep an eye out for these in a 3 or 5 hour radius of Tally. Wood costs a little more but you can catch sales at most that make some pieces more affordable.

Orlando area there is a woodcraft and rockler store in Altamonte Springs. A wood craft in Jacksonville. A woodcraft in Clearwater (Tampa). A blackwater Tools in Pensacola but I don’t know if they sell wood or just tools. Highland woodworks in Atlanta.

The supply sources other mentioned might still be a better option but these give options if you didn’t already know.

Where at on Adams? I tried finding it today while I was running errands but couldn’t seem to find it.
