I like making old helmets and am currently working on this one as a Christmas gift. The helmet is done, now I need to work on the stand for it. It is made from pear wood and turned to about a 1/4". I used an old white-wash brush for the hairs and dyed them with RIT clothing dye (note to self, wear gloves next time). I painted it with metallic copper paint. I plan to turn a pillar with which to mount it on, I wanted to make it a Greek pillar but I don't have a router jig for fluting the pillar on the lathe. I'll probably make it smooth and make a profiled base and top. I'll post the final when I'm done. This is my first turning in awhile and I'm happy how it is turning out. It's a far sight better than my first attempt at a helmet, that's for sure. 398646398647398649398650

Very Nice! That is really cool.
Are you going to color the column? Maybe a black for contrast?

It is painted white, like marble. It's hard to see with my garbage photography, but it does contrast nicely. I wanted it to look like an old column from ancient times. It's not historically accurate but I like it.
