Brian,
If you can wait till later today I can check mine when I get to the shop (got to go after a load of hay in a bit). I have a copy of both editions (if I haven't loaned one out and forgotten!) My opinion without comparing: the book is so valuable to read and have on hand that I'd just buy the new one. I can recommend his "Understanding Wood" as well, if you are interested in that and need a nice Christmas present to your self!

Brian, I didn't get to it yesterday but I did just now. I did not spend an hour analyzing but did a brief comparison of several topics and flipped through both.
I have two editions:
The older one was first printed in 1980 with reprints to 1995. This is probably the 1985 version you mention.
13 chapters, 26 tables, 256 pages
The revised edition was printed in 2000.
13 chapters, 28 tables, 280 pages
The newer, revised edition has:
More and new photos.
Color photos instead of B&W.
Better organized overall
More useful info under "Woodworker's Raw Materials"
New and useful section "Finding wood"
Separate chapter on drying wood
The bottom line: Although the older one would still be useful I would definitely pay more for the newer edition.
