I saw a post recently about rabbet plane recommendations. I cut a few small ones today into small pieces. 3/16 rabbets 5/16 by 1 1/4 pieces. Long side about 14 short side about 4. Used my veritas Jack rabbet. Started them in a gauge line no fence. Worked a treat as usual. Took longer to set the plane up than the cutting. 15 or 20 minutes in all. Here are some pics. Wood is, who knows what grain, sycamore.

That is a much larger plane than any of my rabbet planes.

Good that you were able to get it to do a small job.

Jim I originally had large rabbets in mind when I bought the plane. When I tried it on smaller ones I was surprised. I think because of the longer nose it is easier to start in a gauge line, which is my preferred method. I have a 778 and a 45 also but have come to like the Jack Rabbet better in most cases. I don’t find the size to be a problem in most cases. I have thought about a skew rabbet but haven’t been able to justify the purchase yet.

Yeah, my #10-1/2 seems to come out as often as the other rabbets.

A 78 will work also and has it’s advantages. Depth stop for one. The 78 is a great plane and a great design. For working glazing rabbets using 1 plane it is really good. The bullnose feature helps when making stopped rabbets. I won’t be tossing it from the kit.

That is a great one too Lowell. If it was in the budget I’d buy that and the large combo also.
