Are broken belts in tires a manufacturing defect, or a road hazard? Wife has tire on her car that has broken belt. Whump, whump as you drive. We know it's the tire and not a bearing, as when we mount spare (full size tire,) noise goes away. Had one adjusted out right after we bought them, and adjustment, including mounting was $10 more than we paid for tire originally a month earlier.

It can be either. If it is nearly new, you can try for a warranty claim but good luck... It is most likely impact damage though. Cheers

A broken belt should be warranty. At least it used to be. It will be prorated unless the tire is showing only 20-25% wear.

I had 2 Kum-Ho tires do this. Couldn't get a pro rating.
I now have nothing but loathe for Kum-Ho brand tires.

You need to visit Discount Tire. Their tires, warranty, and service are good.
I recently ran over a screw and it left a hole in the sidewall at the tread line.
I got a new tire mounted and balanced for $12.
