One of my club members brought in 2 - 5’ x 20” to 26” soft maple logs. Both had ambrosia beatle infestation. I live in the south suburbs of Chicago so these bugs are rare this far north. I cored two large pieces and microwaved the smaller ones that fit in the microwave. I have one done and the bigger ones are drying in my basement. The largest is 22” on the long axis. I will have some bark repair and a whole lot of sanding to look forward to.

Beautiful wood Bob! Looking forward to seeing them once finished! Have fun sanding - if that is possible! :D

Thanks Steve. Sanding winged bowls does take time, but this wood is soft maple. I’ve turned some northern Wisconsin hard maple that took the grit off the disk?🤬

Nice save. Without coring you would have lost some beautiful wood!!

Yes Peter. It is worth the time, expense and effort in learning to core. I core almost anything of size. I use the McNaughton system.

Here’s one that was small enough to microwave. Rim is painted black after bark was repaired. It’s about 12” x 9 1/2”.
