I was just wondering if a feller could buy pen blanks and glue them together for segmented stuff. I experimented with gluing cutoffs together but I found that unless they are perfectly smooth, it leaves marks around the edges. This brings up a whole new bunch of tools. Jointers or planers or something. Just a thought. What you all think?

a sander of some sort for pen blanks that would probably be safer
or some gap filling thick CA glue it is pretty much transparent so it really is barely noticeable.

My first thought was "sounds expensive" but I've not done a segmented piece yet so I just don't know :o

Hi Rich,
The winter 2006, "Woodturning Design" has a very good article on Pen Blank Segmented Bowls, that should help with any questions you may have.

I have seen Dick Sing make a few segmented pens, kinda of sorta. Just inserting a small square and gluing up the blank as a whole. It would seem difficult to do on such a small blank. Might want to sonsider make a larger one and cut and rip it down into multiple pen blanks.
