...Well, it does beat throwing the scraps out, into the fire pit....

Been resawing scraps leftover from the latest builds...some I have clamped into a stack.. Trying to keep them flat..
396368
Others have been sawn for 3/4" stock..
396369
Still need ripped for width. Maybe build a few frames, to hold a few panels? May leave these wide, so the plough plane will work better. Need grooves for the panels, and some need a groove to house the bottom panel. need the "extra" for the fence on the planes. Panels?
396370
Hope to get two "end" panels out of the bigger 1/2" thick board...."shorty" is for "Plan B"...needed a glue up for the front and rear panels. Cut a few 1/2" thick parts, 4 wide, and 2 narrow ones. Had to joint the edges...don't like gaps in glue-ups. Smear a bit of glue around, and a few clamps...
396371
One panel glued up...second panel needed a few cauls ....
396372
Set these two aside, and wait on the glue to cure. There IS a 3/4 panel for a top...
396373
Underneath all the Poplar and other goodies, there is what was left of a 1 x 12 of white oak. Will trim it down to size...for a lid.

It is a start....waiting on the glue ups. May try something "different" for raising the panels....
Stay tuned. :D

Had a lot to get done today...just never made it to the shop....feeling "under the weather" today. Decided to just take a day off. Veteran's Day, anyway. (37 years, US Army, Retired)

Maybe tomorrow, eh?

Ok...was able to stay away from the bathroom for a couple hours, today. Got the two panels out of the clamps....and cut them, and a blank for the ends to roughly the same width...needed a little jointing
396508
Little parts = little Jointer...Millers Falls No.11 ( #5-1/4 size)
Trimmed the two glue-ups to the same length....then a little clean up was done..
396509
Worked on all four faces ( 2 panels) until they were all spiffy..
396510
Wonder which one of these will be the front of the box.....which left cutting the end panel blank into two matching parts

396511
Diagonals to find the center..
396512
Mark a square cut line..and split the lines..
396513
And I have two end panels. Spent a while. getting the frame parts milled up..
396514
None were the same thickness....had a few that needed ripped for width...some were tapered. Almost all are ready to be grooved....
396515
More about this in "Part 2" of the Monday Funnies..

Stay tuned..

Ok..needed grooves to house the raised panels...and needed grooves to house a plywood bottom....the first was the easy part...as to why I didn't use the old plough plane?
396516
Was just too long of a plane, for the work needed done.
396517
This is all the jig needed...the second second set of grooves needed something else.
396518
Toys. Candle to keep the Stanley 45 moving smoothly. Combo square to check depth, the Stanley No. 3c was there to level the edge, and let me know which way the grain was actually running. IF the stile or rail was to house the raised panel..it got a groove along the edge...however,, a few rails also needed a groove to house the 1/4" plywood bottom...reset the jig..
396519
Not the best way...just not enough room for all the things....like a depth stop. Managed to get two rails done...for the front and back...may try something else for the two on the ends of the box..
396520
Plan right now, is to work on the front and back sections first...then the ends. Thinking a Tongue & Groove joint to glue the corners of the box together....
Need to finish four stiles for the ends..

396521
But, for tomorrow's shop time, will work on Mortise and Tenon joints. And see about how to raise the panels.

Stay tuned..

3 hours spent IN the shop, today....until the lower legs started to cramp up....may have been working a tad too hard?

Tested out the tablesaw's new fence....not so much as a wiggle...rock solid. Got these ripped for width..
396566
Took a bit, to mill those grooves...jig wasn't the greatest..
396567
But it was safer than doing the grooves on the tablesaw ( BTDT, need a better insert)
Laid out, and milled tenons ..
396568
Then used those, to chop a few mortises..
396569
Enough to dry fit things...
396570
Even cut a foot profile...then raised a panel....just like Sellers does..
396571
Once I got all 4 edges beveled...a dry fit could happen..
396572
Panel was a 1/16" too long...trimmed that back, and the beveled edge redone...then some glue and clamps..
396573
There is a caul across the long edge...to pull things even with the top of the legs...
Set this aside...and worked on the other long panel...

Stay tuned..be right back..

steven c newman
11-13-2018, 6:03 PM
Was finally able to do a dry fit for it..
396574
Waiting on the first one...so I can use the clamps..
396575
Trimmed the rails for the end panels...
396577
At least they are all the same length....trying for a 1/2" tenon on each end....Kept one of the cut-offs..
396578
So I can profile these feet, as well.
396579
Spent most of the day sitting on the shop's stool....and put it here, when I was using it....

How do you hold a glue up...up..
396580
I stuck the ends of the clamps into the vise, so things were up where I could see better.
396581
Beltsander to finish the curved parts, so they at least match each other..
396582
The mortise for the top rail was easy enough...but..I needed to locate where the mortise for the bottom rail needed to be....panel to help mark things out.

Legs below the knees started to get crampy....was time to call it a day....

steven c newman
11-14-2018, 9:14 PM
Well, was a very interesting day....and not in a "good" way.....I got this mess out of the clamps, just about..noonish
396630
Removed all the clamps, set aside the part..and reused all the clamps..
396631
Plus a couple extra ones ...second long panel is glued up. From here, things started downhill...slowly at first....
396632
Got to checking the first panel....seems one end was a tad out of square. BIG square to mark the line, and plane to the line....laid the panel flat on the bench..and watched it rock a bit.....planes and a beltsander soon flattened most of that out....there was a couple spots where the bigger planes just couldn't get to....
396633
Stanley #60-1/2. With the original blade. Had one glue joint that needed trimmed down. Without hitting the surrounding areas....
396634
Used the Stanley 45 to plough a groove. Needed this one because I use a Tongue & Groove joint to glue corners up with. Speaking of grooves, had to extend one...
396635
Seems simple enough to do? Yeah..right..
396636
Somehow managed. There was some break-out...will be hidden..
396637
When the bottom panel gets installed....That was about it...sit this thing aside...for now. Should have stopped right there, but.....
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
11-14-2018, 9:41 PM
One panel done, another in the clamps....still a long way from the 5pm quitting time bell...drat.
396638
Checked and rechecked...sign of things to come....had to re-mark the tenons....used the bandsaw to cut these....( need a lot better light of the saw) not the best I have done. Used the finish panel to lay out mortise locations....and chopped those..
396639
Dry fit...was quite right....tenon shoulders were at fault. Tablesaw was reset, and an attempt to straighten things out....wound up clipping one tenon completely off:mad: Decided to make the other end match...
More cussing.....Time I got all four rails to match...I needed to trim the raised panels a bit...at least I hadn't raised them yet...
More dry fits...WITH a raised panel..
396640
First one of these little raised panels..i tried to do flat on the bench.....second one went into the vise. Was way too hard to clamp these so they would stay put, and I wouldn't smack the clamp with the plane, or my knuckles. In the vise, the plane could ride along on the jaw of the vise. Now, about those clipped off tenons.....I drilled a pilot hole through where they went, then counter-bore so the head of a screw would be below the cutter on the match plane..decided to at least try to assemble it...wound up doing a glue-up...
396641
Will clean this up..tomorrow. The other end? At least it had all of it's tenons....some needed trimmed back a bit...but at least they were still there...test fit for the second raised panel..
396642
HUGE, aren't they? Used the vise one more time...for the last dry fit of the day,,
396644
Made sure everything was square...and it matched the other end panel.. Tomorrow, I'll try to glue this up, then work on the other two, once they are out of the clamps..
5pm! Time to hang up the apron...
396647
And call it a day...stay tuned....

steven c newman
11-16-2018, 12:02 AM
Am I boring anyone , yet?

Needed a light bulb for the bandsaw....waiting on the Boss to decide when she wanted to go out into this mess...
396732
Not sure which was uglier...this view, or the one in the bathroom mirror...YUCK. Pulled into Blue Borg,,,
396733
$4.80...for one bulb? While waiting on the Boss, though..I did get a little bit done...clamps were removed, again...and promptly put to use..
396734
While taking the clamps off the other end panel...."Pop!" Seems one of these was too short
396735
1-1/8" long? Replaced it with a 2" long COARSE thread screw. Checked it for square...
396737
Sharpened this old cutter up...will have work for it to do...
Set the front and back panels "back to back" and clamped them up...for now..
396738
Will need to plane and sand all edges until these two match each other....
Stay tuned....and find out the rest of today's misadventures..

steven c newman
11-16-2018, 12:15 AM
Ok..back from the stores....still nasty outside.
396739
Lightbulb installed....comes on everytime the saw is running, BTW...
396740
Hmmm, I think I can fix that...
396741
Worked on the front and back panels as a unit...
396742
Got the grooves finished up...as well..
396743
The end panel was done a little differently....first I had to set up a plane..
396744
Clamp the panel in place, so it won't move..
396745
Then try to mill a tongue on that edge....flip over and do the other edge.....no matter which way I turned the dang panel,,,plane still wanted to dig into the wood....even after backing the cutter as far as I could

Put the Match plane aside...had a groove to finish cutting..
396746
At least here, I can cut straight across.
Stay tuned..one more episode to do...
:D

steven c newman
11-16-2018, 12:23 AM
Dry fit time?
396747
Dry fit #1....will have to straighten that edge a bit....
396748
Dry fit #2...other panel....only two clamps holding things are those two c clamps...
396749
One clamp here....and that spreader bar....gives some idea of the small size of this box....
396750
Maybe tomorrow, I can get the"missing" end panel done? Maybe cut the plywood bottom to size...and figure out a top.
396751
Now..IF Mother Nature would just pay her heating bill.....that is all ice out there...YUCK....Need to hibernate until Spring...

Stay tuned....we be moving at the speed of ....smell...

steven c newman
11-16-2018, 8:57 PM
Today was more about road trips, and paying bills, than wood working. Still, was able to mill the last of the tongues, once I got the plane set up right..
396779
Spent so time on making the ends match each other....both sides and the top were matched up....even the feet..
396782
Too thin, you say? Not really..
Was able to clamp all four sides into a dry fit....
396783
Those same thin feet....that will match the view from the front or back..
396784
Need to size and cut some plywood for the bottom panel....and cobble up a lid..of some sort.

May get close to some assembly work by Monday? Stay tuned...

Steven,

I liked the way you clamped the panel up to the side of the bench, 2nd from the bottom picture of the 11/11 post at 11:15 PM.

I still think about how I want my first real work bench, with vises and all, to be, and looking at that clamp up made me think on that more. It is good to have a place like that for clamping on the bench, so that was a good thing to think about and learn from.

As always a "real" workbench is a long way down the road. Still no shop, and none for a while to come. Right now it is "need to do carpentry" as usual...currently rebuilding the deck. Right now it is about 38 degrees outside, so I won't be able to do the painting that needs to be done on the last set of railing and on the steps I put together yesterday....not all that much fun to work out there in the cold anyway.

Even if I wanted to work on something both of my current workbenches (both sets of sawhorses) are tied up holding the railing and steps that have one coat of paint on one side of them. I may go outside and install two sets of completed railing on the deck later though, but it is supposed stay in the upper 30s all day.

At any rate am enjoying the build, and was glad to notice how you clamped that one panel up, I just had not thought about using a bench in that exact way.

Looks like the weather up there isn't that great to go out in up there either. We had 4" or so of snow on the deck Monday morning when I headed to work, but it had melted off and I took a few hours off from work to assemble and paint while the temperature was in the 50s to low 60s and was nice outside to work. I may get some more paint on over the Thanksgiving holidays, but all the grandkids will be here, so I don't know.

Apron on the side of my bench is 5/4 thick....from the stile of a salvaged door.

I can clamp to the side of the bench. I can use the leg vise and a clamp. The chisel dresser under the bench has a wide shelf for the top....wide enough I can rest wider/longer items on it. I also have a crochet on the far end. 5' between the leg vise and the crochet...gives me plenty of options. I can also use a clamp across the top of the bench....one end clamps to the side of the bench, the other end grabs the side of the tool well...in case a part is too narrow for the apron.

Stanley 45 was done, time to stash it back in the case...
396864
And...
396865
Close the lid. Cleared the bench's top..
396866
Cut a plywood panel for the bottom of the box...
396867
Then the "Fun/War" can begin.....took all of this apart, laid the clamps close by. laid the parts out to keep them in some sort of order....spread some beads of glue around, trying to get most of it on the tongues....none on the plywood bottom ( I think)....trying to juggle 5 parts and a clamp..all at the same time.....about the second or third try....I managed to get a c clamp to hold ONE foot together...then started adding more clamps..
396868
This was just the start of things....for a while, a diagonal pipe clamp was used to pull things into square....then used two pipe clamps to pull the ends into alignment...

396869
Was finally able to set this forest of clamps aside...I think there just MIGHT be a box in there some where?
Dug out the 1 x 12 White Oak plank I want to use as a lid....
396870
letting the glue up sit a day or two....then clean it up, plane and sand things smooth, and see what size ( and shape? TBD) the lid needs to be...
maybe by Wednesday....I can add a coat of stain....or just Amber Shellac? Stay tuned...

steven c newman
11-18-2018, 1:03 PM
Went to remove the clamps this morning.....one thing led to another....
396918
Lid is cut to size. Corners on the case have been squared up, and a round-over was done...
396919
It even sits flat on it's feet...
396920
A view of the back of the case..
396921
A view from the top?

No hardware installed..yet. One coat of Amber Shellac is drying, now.

Will have to do..as a PIP...stay tuned...

Thanks for looking in!

Shop is closed, today.....may try to get this little box done, this week.

steven c newman
11-19-2018, 7:32 PM
Stopped at my friend's place today....4/4 x 6" x 12'....and a 7/4" x 4" x 10'.....just two Ash boards...destined to be an End Table for the Boss....BTW...she does NOT want a drawer in it....makes it easier for me...Ash is from the same tree as the Entertainment/ Fireplace Surround was made from...

Tomorrow, may get the hinges and handle(s) installed...maybe a length of Black Chain, too. Might see about running the router around on the top....different profiles between the top and underside of the lid?

Ash is sitting here in the Dining Room...getting used to the house. Thinking tapered legs, again...as I no longer have a lathe...not sure about IF she wants a shelf added...

Stay tuned...

Got bored working on a puzzle...went to the shop for a little while...
397026
Rounded over the top and bottom edges of the lid...
397027
Installed the hinges, and..
397028
A handle on each end.....
397029
Installed foot pads.....re-coated all the bared wood, with Amber Shellac....
397030
And closed the lid.
Some of the toys used tonight...other than the router..
397031
And that small hammer. Wood handled screwdriver is a Phillips...and I even needed the next size smaller for the screws used for the handles ( #0 , ?)
Brought the box upstairs....will rub things down tomorrow, and decide IF it needs a coat of varnish...or not..
Almost done..
Thanks for following along...

Ok..needed grooves to house the raised panels...and needed grooves to house a plywood bottom....the first was the easy part...as to why I didn't use the old plough plane?
396516
Was just too long of a plane, for the work needed done.
396517

Stay tuned... Steve, help me understand how you are cutting the grooves for the panels & planes you are using - Is that wooden handled plane in the first pic a plow plane?

steven c newman
11-20-2018, 10:38 AM
Plough plane. Mr. G. Roseboom of Cincinnati, OH made it about 1840-1850s. Was too long to use on the stiles and rails for this little box. I used a Stanley No.45, with a no.12 cutter, to cut the 1/4" x1/4" grooves.

Grooves are centered on the edges. Grooves to house the plywood bottom panel were 1/4" up from the bottom edges of the rails.

Is that Rosebloom plane with a single 1/4 iron, that is, is it one size only? Or can uou change irons to modify groove width? And does it have a wood sole in front the iron? Any pics of the underbelly?

11-20-2018, 11:01 AM
More of a Match Plane, than a plough....so, IF you have other widths with a notch on the back of the cutter, they will work, IF they fit...
397051
Fence is held in place via walnut wedges
397052397053397054
New wedges, new tote, new fence.
397055
Will plough a decent enough groove. Does not have a depth stop, nor a nicker. At almost 14" long, was a bit too long for the 9" long rails.
