I just picked up an old rip saw--looks to be about 26", presentation side of the blade and the handle medallion marked "Welch & Griffith, Boston, Pat. 1830." Split nuts in the handle, and the remains of a nib. Anyone out there ever see one of these?

No, Jim, I didn't see that site. I did find out that W & G was in business from 1830-1847 (?). Thanks for getting back on it.

I'll see what I can do.

They were actually in business until 1887, much later than indicated above. There is an example of company letterhead in Erv Schaffer's book from 1870.

Lousy pictures. etch is not real plain, nib is half gone, but the plate looks to be full width.

Thanks, Pete. Saw an old Ebay ad for a collection of letters and literature from the factory that went into the '70's. I'd love to have seen their production facility.

That saw is probably 1860s from the looks of it. Like most saws that old, rode hard and put away wet!

I agree. Funny thing about this one is that the handle still has its ears and the plate hasn't been filed away.

I'm assuming from your posts that you know about saws, and I thank you for your input.
