Greetings,
Hopefully I've cut the grass for the last time until next spring but I guess we'll see. :)
The day job has been really tough for the last couple of weeks and this past week was no exception. I'm also in the middle of a motorcycle repair so I can get my transportation back up and running again and I'm doing what I can to get ready to take a few days off work and just do whatever I feel like doing for a few days. My hope is that I get some things done and get back in the shop to create a bit of wood dust for a change. I guess we'll see how it all pans out. Back to the grind today so it's off here and getting back to it.

This past week didn't involve as much "woodworking" as I would have preferred, but it was still a pivotal week as I used the CNC for the first time to cut parts for my high end tack trunk side of the business. I surely love my slider, but I'll cut this kind of thing on the CNC any day of the week going forward because of the easier material handling, removing even more human induced inaccuracies and general consistency. The latter was backed up when I assembled the case...it was accurate enough that I discovered my bench isn't exactly flat. LOL More of the same this week including looking at a new small subcontract for another maker plus what will likely be a delightful experience next weekend with a sign painting class lead by Rodger MacMunn which I'm really looking forward to since it includes both paint and gilding.

Spent Saturday at the final softball tournament for the youngster. Sunday after church got back to work on a "coffee station" for my office at my day job. It's intended to have a lower cabinet and an upper hutch. I'm close to the point where I can put the lower cabinet together...if I can stop making mistakes that set me back by half a day each!

Some good stuff above. As for me, I finished my summer shed building project and am very pleased with it. I built it to store all the wood that was beyond crowded in my shop. With all that wood now out of the shop I am really enjoying the new found space and ease of moving around. I now have two benches to work on, too, so I can have two projects going at the same time. I'm looking forward to a productive winter.

Like Mitchell, I also took a break and cut some wood. Not for a floor, but I put up some carsiding in our master bedroom. My fiancee wants to get it stained and then whitewashed to look like a beach wall. I did try to tell her to white wash it first, but I was out voted... ;)

Saturday night we went to a Halloween party dressed as a couple of hippies. I was accused of just digging into my old clothes and dressing with them. I did tell them that the jeans I wore were in better shape than some I had in college.

Yesterday I did get out to the shop and worked a little more on some Christmas presents. Then we had some friends over for the Packer loss. (Good game, even if it was a loss).

Reminds me of the prefinished floor we laid throughout the house. I ordered the 2" size. Not sure why. But the order came in the 3.25" size. Guy asked me if I still wanted it. I said sure , makes no difference. I thanked him a million times when we installed it. Phew.

Almost forgot, I've been milling some pretty large white ash trees, too. I could be the ash wood king if I wanted to mill all the ash trees dying here from the Emerald ash borer. These two were 29" at the butt. This one is 8-1/2 ft long. I parbuckled it onto the mill alone after finally realizing that I could use the winch on my log dolly for that purpose. Oh, yeah, that's my new shed to the right.

I milled this log for pay for a guy who wanted it flitch sawn into 2" slabs. We got 4 nice slabs off it before we hit the first nail. Dug that one out, then promptly hit another, then another. At that point we rolled the log over and started from the other side and started fat 4/4 cuts , only to hit another nail after two or three cuts. Enough of that, I cut the log off above the nails and finished the remaining section w/o further drama.

You can't see it from this photo, but those lower through cuts are over 24" wide. I think there is roughly 225 bf total from that log.

With help from two friends I pulled the other log up onto the mill. This one is 10' long. As soon as the weather is favorable I'll get after it. It's full of limbs on the bottom, and I can see a piece of fence sticking out on that side, too. The top half looks good. This log is for me, so I plan to mill 5 or 6/4 lumber out of the top, hopefully, clear half and slabs for sale from the bottom half until I hit metal. From there down will be firewood.

Weather here in eastern NC has been nice lately, great for some more 2-wheel travel. However I am overseeing the pouring of a slab to extend the shop size. Worth the trade-off I feel.
Those are some serious old iron machines; do you need to notify the local utility company when you fire them up?
