Go to for wood,

Then to stainless steel. The steel for wood only goes to 3/8

The stainless goes to 1/2

A regular NC tap will cut very clean threads in hard wood.

Albany County Fasteners is a good source.

And CA glue will harden the threads so they wear well.

In my world, a bolt threaded into wood (only) would not be an acceptable form of woodworking joinery.

Depending on your needs and situation, you might be able to cut a mortise in the side of your board and snug fit a square nut inside with the bolt entering another side of the wood piece.

1/2" in wood (https://www.grainger.com/category/thread-insert/fasteners/ecatalog/N-8nrZ1z0o425) is going to have a limited holding power compared to common uses for connectors of that size but, certainly doable:

Lowes have some good stock on these. I recently bought some under specialty bolts, next to elevator bolts.
