I think that's what they're called. Does anyone have a link to a decent plan to make one of these? Thanks

The simplest versions are the ones made for a wood lathe. If you search for "lathe powered drum sander" and look at the images to see how simple they are.

Stockroom Supply sell drums if you don't want to make a drum. http://stockroomsupply.ca/shop/drum-sanders.html

I saw it in the GAL book too.

I have a friend that built a thickness sander using a radial arm saw arm to support the drum.

I built the Stumpy Nubs version powered by my Shopsmithand did not care for it. I tossed it and bought a Supermax 16/32. It works great.

The first Performax sander was sold as an attachment for a radial arm saw. I bought one and eventually bought the stand and belt feed to make it a stand alone machine. Is that what your friend has or did he rig up something else?

I was planning do exactly the same thing, do you have any pictures.
Why did you not care for it?

He has metalworking machinery and made the drum and conveyor himself. Mostly used the RAS for height adjustment

Yes, I built one on the Shopsmith but did not like it because of the limited distance between the tubes and quill and the manual feed of the stock. On the LJ website, a guy by the name of Shipwright built one successfully.

I turned mine into a Flat Sander and use it for things like small boxes and such and works well. The white PVC pipe is for dust pick up. I also had my Shopsmith head rebuilt this year and it works much better.
