Here's a picture essay of a modification I made to a friend's pool cue. I don't have a picture of it with the final finish on it yet.

Like most cues, either in the body or the core, it sports quarter sawed maple as the wood of choice.

When I used to drink, I made handles like this. Unfortunately, I was actually trying to make a straight taper. :p

Jeff how did you hold the cue on each end to ensure it was centered and so that you didn't damage the original finish? I like to convert them to walking sticks.

I'm kind of interested in how someone could refer to a cylindrical shaft as being quarter sawn.
