Pine, mainly. Might be enough to build a simple step stool.....if I can get motivated to work in the shop.

This morning...apparently the dogs wanted me up and out of bed......wound up with a mark on the back of my left hand...."L" shaped, and took forever to get it to STOP leaking all over the place....dang blood thinners. Hand still hurts...not sure I am quite ready to mess with sharp objects, just yet. Not even allowed to mow my yard.....

Will see what I can come up with.....maybe some Walnut wedged tenons? Will see what I can cobble up for the stretcher. And what pattern to cut the legs to.....IF I can avoid a couple big knots along the way. Will see what sort of "details" I can come up with...:D

Stay tuned...

May take the camera along to the shop, later today. Hand still hurts....

Just a simple, build-a-long project....nothing real fancy, just a way to use up scraps in the shop. Somedays....I wonder why I even bother with this site.....

Going from one project to the next one....I usually try to clean things up, like the tool well..
391850
Made a mess on the floor, after I had swept things out..
391851
Between the healing up leg ( and a few restrictions, yet) and this thing..
391852
Wasn't in the mood to do too much puttering around.
391853
Goodies from the well?
391854
Put the other planes away....had to dust of the 60-1/2 block plane, before it was placed back in the til...
391855
Along with dusting off the rest of the mob...
391856
These will be my "Keeper Saws"...
391857
Most of the ones hanging up, will get tossed out to the curb.

Stay tuned,, more to come...

steven c newman

Ok...I laid out the scrap pine boards I will try to cobble together..
391858
Then decided to clear the decks.....Next trip to the shop, I stash all those goodies back into their places.
391859
My stash of back saws...and clamps. I think I'll hang unto the backsaws....never know when they will come in handy

Floor was swept, cobwebs knocked down, hand was getting sore....time to quit for a while.....need a tall can, to set the "junk" saws in out on the curb....

Stay tuned, IF the hands stops hurting...I might actually make some sawdust...maybe..

Steven, looks like you need a bigger shop or...........fewer tools. Never mind. And as someone pointed out, it's wood dust, saw dust would indicate a problem!

steven c newman

"Junk saw" are out on the curb..
391874
Found four saws in the mess, that might be worth keeping...
391875
Cleared the bench off...to see exactly what I have for Pine..
391876
Hmm, abit too narrow, and too thin...maybe make a pair of feet?
391878
Longest 1 x 10 scrap I have....3/4" thick....may make this the "top"?
391880
2nd 1 x 10....maybe a glue up? rip the "bad' off of both 1 x 10s, and glue it back together? 1 x 4 as a stretcher....

steven c newman

This being a Monday...and the left hand still sore....shop will be closed for today. Will see how it goes tomorrow.

Will take a look at the two 1 x 10s....see IF there is a way to combine them into a better looking board....without the knots, and the wane, and the pitch pockets....may rip all that sort of stuff off, and see how a glue up would look.

Feet may get a waisted look, a gentle curve in towards the middle. Doesn't need to be much, just enough to be seen. Will see what profile looks better at the "leg's" bottoms, where they will rest on the floor...Stretcher may be a through-tenon, about halfway up.....will add a wedge to that...to match the ones in the top. have to wait and see...whether two tenons through the top, or three? Center and one on each edge....or just wider pair from the edges in? Corners of the top will be rounded. Hmmm, Walnut for wedges?

Just a stool to give someone a bit more reach around the house. Top shelves tend to be a bit too high, in some places....8" high stool should be easy enough to step up on, and step down from.

Stay tuned.

Is that an old Craftsman 3-wheel bandsaw??

steven c newman
08-20-2018, 9:43 AM
Yep, and still runs nicely. Kind of a "Back-up plan" for the next time the main bandsaw goes down.

Found out that Dirt Devil makes a belt for one of their sweepers.....that is a perfect fit for the wheels on the 3-wheeler.

So Cool! I have the same one, bought it with the 4 1/8" bench top jointer many years ago, perhaps 1982? It still runs like new. They were the first 2 machines i bought new, made me a true Power Tool Woodworker :)

Bought that saw back in the 90s...$90 at a garage sale. I might put a narrow scrolling blade on it, sometime.....better cuts the a sabre saw..

Van is fixed. Hand? not yet...still wants to leak. Blood Thinners tend to do that.

Had a Gulley-washer come through this evening ( and a Tornado Warning..) and now I have a creek running across the shop floor......shop is closed.

Must be Monday....

Single Brain Cell Sketch Up has worked out the details, and a plan has been formed.

Waiting on the shop to dry out, today.....before I venture back down there.

steven c newman
08-21-2018, 10:25 PM
Almost dried out in the shop...
392004
Decided to cut the one plank to length...
392005
Yeah, cut from the same board??? We have ways..
392006
Stanley No. 3c
392007
Faces of the two needed cleaned up..
392008
Then I find the center points, draw a few curvy lines, bandsaw to cut the lines, and some not so curvy lines..
392009
Hey....both pieces match! These will get a startecher between them..
392010
Need to cut some more tenons. All of which will get a Walnut wedge. through tenons + wedges = means I have some mortises to chop...maybe tomorrow.

Still had to boards to mill...stay tuned, BRB.

steven c newman
08-21-2018, 10:36 PM
Had 18 photos, try to get 8 at a time....anyway, had two boards to cut down..
392011
This had two "issues"..
392012
That pitch pocket had to go, and this knot, as well....the other board?
392013
Wane, remains of a knot, and yet another pitch pocket....cut a few lines...
392014
These are the scraps. Jigs and such can use them...
392015
Bandsaw rips about as straight as I do with a handsaw. Back to the plane, again..
392016
There are two pieces in the background, and there were "jointed" first. I simply stacked them up, and planed the third piece.....the stack never moved...
392017
The longer piece was trimmed down to length...and a squared end, to boot..
392018
Already for clamps and glue....stay tuned...

steven c newman
08-21-2018, 10:41 PM
Clamps and glue...
392019
Couple scraps to hold things steady. Mock up of the legs?
392020
Then the stretcher between them. Round the corners here and there.

Nice little evening in the shop. Spot on the back of the left hand has a touch of infection.....have the goop to apply for it...will see how that turns out.

Need to chop a few mortices, and cobble some wedges....maybe tomorrow? Stay tuned..

steven c newman
08-22-2018, 9:57 AM
Letting the glue cure a while...maybe later today, I can remove the clamps? Letting the left hand heal a bit, too.....:o

May work on the feet and stretcher this afternoon-ish? Once the stretcher is fitted to the legs, I can mark the locations of the mortises through the top of this step stool.

Stay tuned...

Looking good to me!

This is the kind of stuff i need to do instead of trying to make other people happy, much more relaxing and fun!

Two weeks ago, was in the Hospital....ya think it might be a bit early to push a lawn mower around?......Kind of sore, tonight....

May just take the camera down to the shop...and see how things turned out...

steven c newman
08-22-2018, 11:04 PM
Wandered down to the shop..slowly. Always had towels in the dryer....they needed to be run through again....so, inorder to kill the time waiting on the dryer...
392044
Clamps taken off, face planed to clean the glue off. Set up the legs, again..
392045
To see which scrap WAS the one for the stretcher....hmmm, not this one..
392046
That's a bit better? Drew some lines..cut a few...
392047
Might just work. Used the tenons to lay out for a hole to be dug...
392048
One done. Chopped straight through. Test fit?
392049
Repeat for the other end...and another test fit..
392050
Heavy pencil line, to show where the wedge will go....wedge? Well, I do have a stick of Walnut..
392051
I'm sure a few wedges can be cut from this.

Dryer is done, time to stop for the night...haul the basket upstairs, and sit my tired "foundation" into a comfy chair..

Stay tuned...6 more mortises to go....

steven c newman
08-23-2018, 5:56 PM
Spent the night fighting Uncle Charles ( Horse) from the hip down to the shin....in the back of the right leg.....was NOT a good night. have spent today doing as little as I can get away with, even less if the boss lets me. Might try a bit after supper this evening....just need 6 mortises chopped, is all. May just drill and square them....forstner bit to hog the center out, chisel to square each up. Maybe tomorrow, I can mold a few edges, and a little assembly work?

steven c newman
08-23-2018, 9:03 PM
Another trip to the shop...more clothes to dry...and a few holes to do,,,
392090
All marked out, centers found and a point drove in..
392091
Forstner bit, and a scrap of pine, for when the bit comes through....
392092
6 holes drilled...need to square them up..
392093
3 done..dry fit?
392094
Then do the other end...and dry fit everything up...
392095
Stretcher was just a hair long....Had more drawing to do..
392096
Not much of a round corner, but the shins will like it...Squared the ends....
Stay tuned, more to come...( less to do, tomorrow;))

steven c newman
08-23-2018, 9:10 PM
Saw work. Need to cut some kerfs, for the wedges....the two on the stretcher were easy....bandsaw. The three on each leg?
392097
While things were apart....used these toys..
392098
More to knock the sharp edges down a bit..
392099
Bandsaw to cut a few wedges...needed 8.....
392100
Corners done, ends squared up..wedges ready....
392101
Back was sore..decided to stop for the night...always tomorrow.
Stay tuned....

steven c newman
08-24-2018, 2:54 PM
Ran this strange contraption around, so smooth the areas where the spokshave worked over...
392181
And sanded all the parts....
392182
180 grit. Then the "fun" began...
392183
Legs at one time were a glued up panel, sold by the Blue BORG....had a split to glue back up....on both of the legs...Clamps to pull the stretcher into the legs. Used a too-fat wedge on one end....glue and clamp to fix that split....as for the top..
392184
It has it's own clamps...

Will let this mess sit until sometime after supper, tonight.....and see how the glue up went....while I peel dried glue off me fingers...

Stay tuned....almost done?

steven c newman
08-24-2018, 9:50 PM
Now out of the clamps, and cleaned up...time for a PIP of this 4 day project?

392209
Under the top. Haven't decided on a finish, yet. The Boss already likes it!

Stands 8" tall....is 11-3/4" long, and is 8-5/8" wide.....Boss likes it for a foot rest....

May post more, after the finish is done...Thanks for looking in...

steven c newman
08-29-2018, 6:50 PM
Oh-righty, then...Finish is on the Step Stool....Golden Pecan stain, when dry, a coat of Amber shellac.....then after that was dry...a coat of Clear Gloss Poly..
392481392482392483
Kind of a Pumpkin Pine flavour?

I think I can call this done, now? May rub out the varnish..tomorrow...
Thanks for looking in.

Thanks for looking in!

Wife's Pastor happened to see this little stool.....decided it would be THE perfect spot to set his Bible, during church services. So, it is now at the Auburn Ave. Baptist Church.
