The greatest voice in soul and arguably of rock and roll is gone and the celestial super choir has a new lead. RIP

Totally agree. The Queen of soul will be missed.

Man, I hadn't heard this. Well, the Band in Rock-n-Roll Heaven just got even better.
Rest in Peace Aretha. Thanks for the memories.

Elvis died 8/16/77.
So, that's the Queen of Soul and the King of Rock N Roll on the same day.
Maybe that's something.

Somehow it seems appropriate.

What's your favorite song?

"Do Right Woman, Do Right Man".

If Whitney is Mount McKinley, Aretha is Everest.

Legendary bluesman Robert Johnson also died on this day (80 years ago.)

As a huge soul music junkie, Aretha will always be at the top of my pile of favorite musicians. Her voice, phrasing, soul, spirit and confidence are unmatched. I've been listening to her music throughout my whole life and still get chills through my body at certain moments in certain songs. That's when you know that certain intangible force called soul is truly alive and present.

Listening to her right now. What better way to pay her tribute than to play her music all day!

Hard to pick just one favorite for me...

"Amazing Grace"
"Soul Serenade"
"You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman"
"Pullin"
"Mary Don't You Weep"
"Ain't No Way"
"The Weight"
"Don't Play That Song"
.
.
Oh, it just goes on and on for me...

Rest Easy Aretha.

My favorite didn't get much play. It was called "If I Lose This Dream", I think she and a sister composed and wrote it.

It was interesting learning on GMA this morning that she, Smokey Robinson and other stars all lived on the same street as kids. Pretty amazing output from that place! RIP Queen!

+1 I loved her in the Blues Brothers. If you haven't seen the movie, do so. It's great in so many ways.

She did a track on the Songs of West Side Story album, "Somewhere". Amazing, just like the rest of her works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYbDvGnDBlM
