Got this block plane plane that was sitting in a box for many years. I googled the name of it and didn’t get much information. Can anyone tell me more about this? I cleaned it up and sharpened it and it seems to work well. Thanks in advance.

If the name on it is Witherby, that is a well known maker of chisels. The actual involvement of Mr. T. H. Witherby was possibly short lived before it became a trade mark of the Winsted Edge Tool Works.

Your plane was likely made mid 20th century.

It isn't shown in their 1918 catalog.

That is a product with the Witherby name and likely nothing to do with the T H Witherby legacy, at least to my knowledge.

If it works well, be happy and use it.

It may be someone who had rights to use the name. It may be the trade mark to the name has become public domain.

There is also Witherby Publishing, seems to be mostly maritime titles.

It also looks like the kind of product many hardware stores would carry to sell to women looking for a stocking stuffer for their husbands.

More research would be in order if it is something you have to know.

Winsted made a few planes as well as chisels....and baskets. They used the Witherby name as a brand name for their tools. Usually made in Torrington area of CONN. easy enough to look up.
