Anyone order from ToolsFromJapan.com this year?

Hi All,

I ordered some koyamaichi chisels on ToolsfromJapan.com three months ago (May 18). With no update to the order I contacted Stuart two months after ordering (in July) wanting to know if there are any updates and when I can expect to receive the items. Haven't heard from him yet, or had any updates to the order status online three months on.

Has anyone here ordered from him recently this year and received their purchases/communication? I know he was going through a rough time last year from his blog post, so I expected a delay in getting the items, but definitely expected some form of communication.

I'm pretty sure a few people have, that I've heard from here in various threads. I just place my order (don't remember when my last one was), and forget about it until I get a "surprise" package. If I needed something I could get elsewhere, was in a hurry for it, and didn't mind paying extra for it, I would order from somewhere else.

Please come back and post in this thread when the chisels show up.

I ordered some chisels from Stu in Jan/Feb they took 3-4 months to show up with no contact in between, in my case they were an assortment of different sizes, styles and 2 brands.
You will get your chisels just may take a bit of time, be prepared for nice surprise one day soon.

Hi Hasin,
People reporting here earlier in the year also had little or no communication. But IIRC, they all (eventually) received their tools and were pleased with them. Stu's reputation is solid (aside from the lack of communication).

Edit: Here's a link (http://www.toolsfromjapan.com/wordpress/?p=1016) to Stu's blog post that talks about what's going on. Reading that and earlier posts, it sounds like he got behind when his Mom died and then got buried in orders (a good thing) when the Yen dropped.

Let us know how you like the chisels after they arrive!

Without going over what has already been mentioned here and elsewhere, there is also the fact that Stu doesnt stock these chisels, which he mentions on the website.

So on top of the normal wait, you have to factor in the lead time for them to either be made or at least arrive from the blacksmith.

A number of popular blacksmiths have lead times in the years, so when you order in such a way, you have to be prepared to wait. I dont believe these will take as long, but you have to accept its going to take a while.

Sadly it seems everyone who has purchased items from ToolsFromJapan has reported to have not heard a single word from Stu.

It sounds like he is operating a small business with barely time to eat, let alone answer everyone's questions or suggest an ETA that he may not have the adequate information to predict.

From what Stewie said it seems like common items like stones and such ship fairly quick. Items that may have to be ordered individually from blacksmiths with months to years of orders ahead of them will take longer.

Thank you everyone. I don't doubt that Stu will get the items to me eventually. A little more communication would be much appreciated though, especially after emailing him after waiting a while already.

Hi All, just wanted to update this thread to say that I received my chisels and gennou yesterday. Exactly 100 days since ordering, but they seem worth the wait. So if you are ordering from tools from Japan, you’ll receive your order, just don’t expect much communication.

More for aesthetic reasons than anything, I ordered them with different handle woods and I like the look. I spent 15 minutes trying to set a hoop on the gumi one yesterday, and didn’t have much luck (dinged up the handle a bit too) so any tips would be appreciated.

Not an unusual wait since I'm sure they had to be made. There is a pretty high demand for this stuff now and a limited number of blacksmiths so the wait can be pretty long for things that weren't that long a wait, not that long ago. :D

Take your time with the prep. Read Brian’s blog a few times and then go for it.

If going the kigoroshi route (traditonal, but benefits debatable) be careful on some of the harder
/more brittle handles - would be a shame to chip the end.

Thanks for getting back to us on the outcome of your purchase. Often one has to wait for the better things in life.

The 'look' is impressive.

The different handle materials are reminiscent of color coded handles on nut drivers. This was one of my thoughts when using different woods for handles on various chisels.

Not clear from your statement if you heard anything during those 100 days after placing your order. Did you pay at the time of ordering or when the item was shipped?

In any case, if you heard nothing during those 100 days despite making attempts to get a response from the seller, then "Thank you very much" would be my thought, and I would never order anything from any seller who is going to hang me high and dry for 30 days, let alone 100 days.

If the seller has some emergency, that is fine, but if not keeping in touch with a customer is his or her usual way of doing business, I will choose to have nothing to do with him or her, because it is my money. I don't care how great his or her products are.

I received an email from Stu 6 days ago saying my order has shipped and he upgraded the shipping to EMS shipping due to the delay in fulfilling the order. I didn't get any responses to my attempts to contact him since placing the order. Payment was taken at the time of order (which is fair, as he has to pay his suppliers). It's fine by me, while I would have liked a bit more contact, I knew going in that it would take some time, and was not in much of a rush.

I've been waiting for my chisels ordered on July 2 now with no response on what is going on with them. In my quiet impatient mood with the waiting time I ended up ordering a lot of 8 hira machi nomi used chisels from Japan at at really attractive price, they of course were quick to ship but are now hung up in customs for the last week, so the whole experience is souring my mood. I really like working with the Japanese chisels that I already have... Tataka Atsu Nomi 24mm from another dealer and the 18 and 36mm Koyamaichi oire nomi + 36mm Tsuki nomi are great.
