Several weeks ago I found a plans for a very simple MCM inspired sofa for the patio. I liked a lot about it but a few things bugged me, this resulted in a complete redesign of the original project.

I used Ipe and White Oak. The finish is Penofin Marine Finish.

The main platform is all pegged mortise and tenon.
The legs are held to the stretcher with pegged mortise and tenon.
Front and rear stretched are connected via sliding dovetail.
The entire piece can assembled/disassembled without tools.

A time lapse of assembly on the patio.

And you should be - pleased with yourself - that's very stylish. Do you plan to leave it out in the weather? Personally, I would put a cover over it when not using it to avoid yearly maintenance. Learned my lesson after a couple of disappointments with exterior finishes.

very cool bench - love the design. How hard was it working the ipe?

How hard was it working the ipe?

Not terribly difficult in regard to grain, etc. It IS terribly difficult in regard to wear on tools, possible lung irritation, and a misery to sand.

With that said, I will likely use it again recognizing it is hard on the tools.

Because it is oily I used pegs on all mortise & tenon joints.

Great work. Too nice to leave outside.

It is a bit over the top for the patio.
My wife is going to order a cover for it.
It will be stored inside during winters.

That has the wonderful feel of the mid-century modern furniture I grew up with. A real looker. Great choice of materials and the splash of color from the pads completes the look.
